Wifredo T. Panang MPA-1 POLITICS AND RELIGION As has been the case since Spanish colonial times, religion and politics are inextricably linked in the Philippines. The church however, is trying its best to re-educate people and restore morality in politics. Some religious leaders even went as far as running for government position. Haidt (2012) challenges conventional thinking about morality, politics, and religion in a way that speaks to conservatives and liberals alike. Secular political entities such as the nation, the state, race, class, and the party became the focus of myths, rituals, and commandments and gradually became objects faith, loyalty and reverence (Gentile, 2006). Everywhere one looks, religion and politics appear to be intertwined in public life (Fowler, 2018 ; Routledge, 2018). The church should remain as that strong moral mouthpiece in order to maintain the delicate balance between religion and public morality.   Bibliography Haidt (2012). Religion and Politics in America: Faith, Culture, and Strategic Choices The aim of this book is to understand the politics of religion in the US and to appreciate the strategic choices that politicians and religious participants make when they participate in politics. Gentile (2006). Politics as Religion This book presents a unique comparative history of civil and political religions. Fowler & Routledge (2018). The Righteous Mind: Why good people are divided by politics and religion. The author gives you the key to understanding the miracle of human cooperation, as well as the curse of our eternal divisions and conflicts.   Abegail Q. Panang MPA-1 POVERTY Poverty is a complex societal issue that requires everyone’s attention. It is important that all members of the society work together to provide the opportunities for them to reach their full potential. Pogge (2005) describes that despite a high and growing global average income, billions of human beings are still condemned to life long severe poverty, with all its attendant evils of low life expectancy, social exclusion, ill health, illiteracy, dependancy and effective enslavement. Poverty is not about shortage, it is about right and relationships; about how people are treated and how they regard themselves; about powerlessness, exclusion and loss of dignity, yet, the lack on an adequate income is at its heart (Oppenhein, 1993). Over the last decade, the theory that pov erty in the world’s poorest regions could be alleviated by providing small loans to micro-entrepreneurs has become increasingly popular (Hulme & Mosley, 1996).   Bibliography Oppenhein (1993). The Concept “Poverty” towards Understanding in the Context of Developing Countries ‘Poverty qua Poverty’: with Some Comparative Evidence on Britain.   Pogge (2005).
