Rapidly    expanding loans (illustrated in the above chart),   at somewhat higher average rates, brought net    earnings to a new record high in spite of the fact   that inflation reached into the cost side and in creased operating expenses sharply. Higher taxes, however, brought net profits after taxes below first half 1950 levels.
