At the age of 5, he was trafficked to Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh into the carpet making industry. For five years he was held in bondage and forced to work in inhuman conditions. The daily routine of children there included verbal and physical abuse, long hours of work and lack of access to medical care for their injuries.Kalu and 18 other children were rescued by in 1997 by BBA. A year later Kalu was brought to Bal Ashram. He was a curious child, a quick learner and full of wit. From a young age he decided that he would dedicate his life to the elimination of child labour. In 2000, he was selected to attend the launch of Kerry Kennedy's book 'Speak Power to Truth' where he got the opportunity to meet with the then President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton. Making use of the opportunity Kalu told him, “I have been freed from bondage but many of my brother and sisters are still languishing in it”. To which the President replied affectionately, “What can I do? I'm not even going to be President in a few months”. “You don't have to be the President of the United States to do  something for the children of the world”,  replied Kalu. As a young man, Kalu's competencies saw many multi-national corporations offering to open their door for him, instead he chose to work in remote villages, rescuing vulnerable children from child labour. He was a song writer and poet who used these talents to sensitise communities on the evils of child labour. On the 22nd of September, 2011, Kalu and his team were in a remote village in Koderma district of Jharkhand when he was bitten in his sleep by a Krait snake. Though he was given immediate medical care, Kalu breathed his last on 18th October, 2011. He was 23 years old. Our work is inspired by our activists like Kalu Kumar, Adarsh Kishore, Dhoom Das who gave up their lives in the fight against trafficking, bonded labour and slavery, and countless others who have been assaulted, threatened and pressured during BBA'S 34 years of struggle to secure liberty and justice for the exploited. We salute the efforts of all the people who continue to make daily sacrifices for protecting, ensuring liberation and empowering children and in the process contributing towards building a child friendly society.  In 1980, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) or Save the Childhood Movement was born when a group of young professionals, led by Kailash Sathyarthi responded to the victimization of bonded laborers in a brick kiln and risked their lives to rescue them from slavery. Over the next 34 years, BBA has pioneered in strategies for the protection of children from trafficking and other forms of exploitation and meaningful and quality education for all children.  This is an attempt to present in brief our efforts and their outcomes in the past four years to uphold the rights of the child. INTRODUCTION TO BBA   “If I as a girl could enroll 15 children; wouldn’t all of you as world leaders be able to enroll all children into schools?  Devli Kumari Former Child Labourer ”
