Bio-Briquette: An Efficient Source of Alternative Energy in Nepal  M. Khanal  1  , M. Koirala 2   Most of the community forest user groups and other producer groups have been producing bio- briquette as sources of alternative energy as well as sources of income. So, it is recently beinghighlighted as an alternative energy in the energy sector promotion. Bio-briquette is one of the potential sectors for intervention of biomass energy in the context of Nepal because of hugeavailability of raw biomass in most of the places. It had been commonly adopted in Nepalesesociety from around 10 years ago. The production of bio-briquettes is running at initial stage andgradually switching in to the commercial production in Nepal. The demand of the briquettes isgradually increasing specially in urban areas, but existing production system has not fulfilled thedemand yet. Production of briquettes gradually increases in the recent years which spread over 51 districts of Nepal within five years. Few years ago only limited residential sectors were produced and used but the time has been changed and communities, companies and other sectorsalso started the production and consumption. Residential sectors are the most common sector for the use of bio-briquette in Nepal. It 97.6%, then other sectors like corporate sectors holds 2.3%of total consumption. 48.1% briquettes were used for the space heating of the houses and officesas well as other uses like baby and mother massage, barbecue production, cooking, boiling of water and poultry farming comprises 34.4%, 7.6%, 6.8%, 1.2% and 0.8% respectively. Thedifference between production cost and retail cost were found very high which does not competewith other fuels in the future. Only after adjusting the market price of bio-briquette we can stepforward to replace the excessive use of kerosene and liquid petroleum gas. There are lots of challenges on production and distribution /consumption of briquettes like technology, market, price etc. But there is no doubt long with many challenges, bio-briquette has lots of potentialsand opportunities to develop and promote as an alternative source of energy in Nepal.
