  Material Properties Farhan Alkouz, MD  • Biomaterials encompasses:all synthetic and natural materialsused during orthopaedic procedures.a substance or a combination of substances (otherthan drugs)     Basic Concepts:    LOAD : o A force that acts on a body    STRESS : o intensity of an internal force o Force per unit area o Pascal's (Pa) or N/m2    STRAIN : o relative measure of the deformation of an object o change in length / srcinal length     Deformation :      Elastic • reversible changes in shape to a material due to a load • material returns to srcinal shape when load is removed    Plastic • irreversible changes in shape to a material due to a load • material DOES NOT return to srcinal shape when load is removed     finite element analysis • breaking up a complex shape into smaller “ finite elements ” with simple geometric form, usually triangular or quadrilateral elements are used.and balancing the forces and moments of each form to match it with its neighbor
