NAME: ITAYI B MUDAVANHU REG NUMBER: R1711815 COURSE: HHS0350 WESTERN EUROPE, MID 19 TH  CENTURY TO PRESENT QUESTION: What does the term “Brexit” refer to and what were the main reasons why a majority of people in the United Kingdom voted  for “Brexit” in 2016?      “Brexit” is the abbreviation for British exit which refers to the decision taken by Britain on a referendum held on 23 June 2016 to leave the European union .The European Union is an regional trade agreement involving 29 countries, it began after world war II it was formed with the idea that countries that traded together are less likely to go to war with each other .There are many rea sons why a majority of people in the United Kingdom voted for “Brexit” in 2016 such as immigration Britain become a net importer of immigrants from other European union member states all looking for employment ,Sovereignty all the decision making powers in the European Union is vested in the European Commission rather the British people want to make their own decisions, Britain wanted to open its trade with other counties as the European union restricted free trade .This essay seeks to engage to interrogate various reasons w hich lead to majority of people in the United Kingdom voting for “Brexit” in 2016. To begin with in June 2016 the United Kingdom held a referendum to reveal if whether its citizens wanted their country to remain in the European union or not voters had to vote for “leave” or “remain” “Leave” won the June 2016 referendum with 51.9%   whilst the “Remain” received 48.1% the process of leaving the European Union by Britain has been termed “Brexit”.The European Union is an econ omic and political partnership which fosters economic cooperation among member states .The treaty on the European Union states that any country can apply for membership if it respects the democratic values of the European union the EU has its own currency called the Euro which is the second largest traded currency after the United States dollars 1 . Therefore “Brexit” is a term which refers to Britain ‘s withdrawal from the European Union through a referendum which won with 51.9%votes against 48.1% the process of Britain exiting the European union has been termed “Brexit” To add on to the above majority of people in the United Kingdom voted for “Brexit” because of immigration factors a lot of people in Europe were immigrating to Britain to look for employment. The European Union has a law which permits citizens from countries in Europe that are member states of the European union to work and migrate anyway among member states, the United Kingdom being a member state it was receiving more immigrants from other European countries looking for employment this triggered many Britons to vote in favour of leaving the European union ,by voting in favour of “Brexit” most people in the United Kingdom believed that their country would regain control over immigration and its  boarders .Statics from the European Union Migration observatory indicates that Europeans from member states of the European Union who migrated to Europe are 268.00 2 .Goodwin and Millazo are of the view that in areas that have larger numbers of immigrants the vote in 1  D Carswell,” why  lam backing vote leave in the EU referendum ”, http://www.telegraph.co.uk \news topics \referendum\1192217 2   “EU Migration to and from the UK”, www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk    favour of “Brexit” was high. 3  Therefore, increase of immigrants in the United Kingdom is one of the factors why voters voted in favour of “Brexit” in 2016. Furthermore, sovereignty is one of the major reasons why people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit”. Majority  of the people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” so that they might be Sovereign the state of making laws and controlling resources without the coercion of other nations. The European Union membership took decision making away from the people as the European Commission has the mandate of making decisions pertaining member states of the European Union, this idea of the European commission making decisions and regulations 4 for the British people which majority of the British population did not like becomes one of the reasons why most people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” because they wanted to be sovereign with the power to make decisions concerning their country vested in them not in the European Union .Therefore Sovereignty can be regarded as one of the reasons why majority of the people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” because by existing the European Union power to make decisions will be vested in the British people. Moreover, one of the reasons why a majority of people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit”  is the idea of economic opportunities most “Brexit” supporters saw leaving the European Union as an economic gateway for Britain whilst those who support the “remain” such as Former British Prime Minister David Cameroon view “Brexit” as economically disastrous. Majority of the people in the United Kingdom who voted in favour of “Brexit” saw economic gateway in terms of Free trade and Free market, considering the EU which regulated Brita in to trade with other markets “Brexit” creates a flexible Trade in which Britain is not regulated to trade with other countries without European Union trade embargos ‘free trade will boost Britain as a market and boost the economy 5 .Therefore a majority of people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit”  because they wanted to open the British markets for free trade rather than the restrictions of the European Union. On a concluding remark it is of paramount importance to take cognisance of the fact that a majority of  people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” because by exiting the European Union Britain will be able to control the movement of migrants into Britain as the migrants are increasing, Sovereignty is one of the reasons why most people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” because the European Union made decisions on behalf of the British people like any other member state this was not liked by people who voted in favour of “Brexit” so that they might be able to make decisions concerning their country independently from the European union , Economic factor is one which lead to a majority of  people in the United Kingdom voted in favour of “Brexit” because majority of British  business people wanted to exercise free trade. 3  S Becker and T Fetzer ,” Does   migration cause extreme voting”, Warwick, Univer sity of Warwick,2017, pp10-11 4  Ibid 5   “Brexit: two centuries in the making”’, google.com      BIBLIOGRAPHY Carswell D,” why  Iam backing vote leave in the referendum ”, http://www.telegrapgh Beacker S and Fetzer T,” Does migration cause extreme voting”, Wa rwick, University of Warwick “Brexit”: two centuries in the making”, google.com   “EU Migration to and from UK “, www.observatory.ox.ac.uk
