Data mart s contain a subset of enterprise-wide data, built for use by individual departments or divisions. Data mining is the process of finding hidden patterns and relationships in data; data miningtools are able to locate patterns in large volumes of data and are able to analyze significantrelationships which exist only when several dimensions are viewed at the same time.   A data model is a description of the organisation of data that reflects the information structure of an enterprise .  A data warehouse is a database in which data is collected for analysis in order to supportmanagement decision making. A data warehouse is defined by its purpose. It comprises data that isby definition subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, and non volatile meaning that it is focusedon a business concept (e.g. sales) as opposed to a business process. There are two basic types of data warehouse: ‘enterprise data warehouses’ and ‘data marts’. It is typically a subject database thatenables users to analyse a company’s vast store of operational data.   DSS ( Decision Support Systems) are software systems that supports exception reporting, stoplight reporting, standard repository, data analysis and rule-based analysis.   Hyperion Essbase OLAP Server is an analytic platform for delivering enterprise analyticapplications for reporting, analysis, modeling and planning. It is recognised as the industry-leadingOLAP technology for analytic applications spanning all business areas including e-business andCRM analytics. Hyperion Wired for OLAP is a tool that leverages and extends the advanced analyticsof Essbase . Hyperion’s Integration Server  has been described as a breakthrough technology that integratesrelational systems such as data warehouses, packaged applications and ERP systems with HyperionEssbase and IBM DB2 OLAP Server.   HOLAP (Hybrid Holap) is, as its name implies, a hybrid of MOLAP and ROLAP that is typically moredifficult to implement and administer.   MD-OLAP (Multidimensional OLAP) is one of two prominent architectures for OLAP systems. MD-OLAP architectures utilise a multi-dimensional database to provide analyses. MD-OLAP architectsbelieve that OLAP is best implemented by storing data multi-dimensionally. (see OLAP systems &ROLAP).   ROLAP (Relational OLAP) is one of two prominent architectures for OLAP systems. ROLAParchitectures access data directly from a data warehouse to provide OLAP analyses. ROLAParchitects believe that OLAP analyses are best provided directly against the relational database. (seeOLAP systems & ROLAP).   slice and dice ’ is a term that is used to describe a complex data analysis function that is providedby MDDBS tools.   Slice, Slicer, Slicin g  The limiting of a cellset to data for a single member from a particular dimension. Slicing in MDX issimilar to filtering in a relational database. In an MDX query, the WHERE clause is called the slicer. Slice and Dice    The ability to move between different combinations of dimensions when viewing data with anOLAP browser. Multidimensional analysis tools organize the data in two primary ways: in multipledimensions and in hierarchies. Slicing and dicing refers to the ability to combine and recombine thedimensions to see different slices of the information.   A snowflake schema ( or ‘snowflaking’) results from the normalisation of the dimension tables of a star schema. In snowflaking, some of the fields of the dimensions tables are split off into separatetables. Despite achieving a higher level of normalisation, snowflaking reduces the performance of BItools.   A star schema is a very simple database design consisting of a central fact table (for the subjectarea) that is linked to one or more related attribute or dimension tables (that contain descriptiveinformation of the subjects dimensions). This schema clearly presents the multi-dimensionalcharacter of the data and allows for the rapid querying of the data in a data warehouse. The centralfact table can contain many millions of rows.   Calculator cache is the buffer zone in the memory which is used to track the data or create thedata blocks at the time of calculation; calculator cache enables the centralized control of the memoryin the calculator cache and also reduces the space and improves the performance of the cube.Essbase default is 20mb. VBA : Visual Basic Application Programming Interface (API) used for accessing the data in the cubeusing the spread sheet add-in. Mask is Essbase command. It is used if Essbase data is imported into a program that requiresdelimiters. Use INCMASK to re-enable the display. Use SUPMASK to disable the display.
