  • 2. Open access is a means to a goal – not a goal in itself
  • 3. What if we could freely get to all the essential knowledge contained in scientific articles, without those articles necessarily being open access?
  • 4. Nano-publication in Science & Medicine Jan Velterop – EUA Autumn Conference – Gießen – 9 October 2009
  • 5. Current knowledge transfer
  • 6. Current knowledge transfer Signal to noise ratio?
  • 7. Current knowledge transfer – an analogy: needle transport
  • 8. Shouldn’t we focus on the ‘needles’ and learn how to reason with the essence of available knowledge?
  • 9. If we did, we could have: – access to far more knowledge than now – access to knowledge in our own language irrespective of the language it was first written in

  • 11. Every solution has its problem
  • 12. What is needed? What do we have to do? What do we still have to overcome?

  • 37. What’s to be done? De-PDF repository content (or at least add XML or HTML versions) Convert literature to nano-publications it is cheap – current estimate ≈ ¢’s per kilo-character (≈ 1 typical research journal page) Share nano-publications (in an open triple store) Start with biomedical (life science) content simply because semantic concept methodologies are most advanced in that area
