  ENGLISH LANGUAGE LESSON PLAN FOR YEAR 5 Subject : English Language Class : Year 5 Date / Day : 20 March 2014 / Thursday Time : 8.10 am  –  9.10 am ( 1 Hour ) Theme : World Of Knowledge Topic : Discovering Plants Focused Skills : Reading and Writing Integrated Skills : Listening and Speaking Learning Outcomes : 3.3 Read and understand phrases, sentences, paragraphs and whole texts. 3.8 Read and understand simple factual texts for main ideas, supporting details, sequence and cause and effect. 4.4 Complete texts with the missing word, phrase or sentences.   Curriculum Specifications : 3.3.3 Read and understand and simple paragraphs. 3.8.1 Scan for specific information in factual texts 4.4.2 Complete simple instructions and directions, descriptions, poems and other texts with the missing word(s) with guidance given in the form of words and pictures. Lesson Objectives : At the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to: i) Read and understand and simple paragraphs. ii) Scan for specific information in factual texts iii) Complete simple instructions and directions, descriptions, poems and other texts with the missing word(s) with guidance given in the form of words and pictures.   Educational Emphases : CCTS - Giving & getting information Moral Values - Love the environment Language Content : Sentence patterns - Wh  –  question words Grammar : Adjectives Sound System - 1,2, & 3 syllable words. Vocabulary - dragon fruit, oval, flesh, seeds and creeper Teaching Aids : i) Realia of fruits ii) Picture of fruits iii) Word Cards on characteristics of fruits iv) Work Sheets Previous Knowledge : i) Pupils have seen, heard, and read about the fruits in previous years. ii) Pupils also had learned about fruits in year 4.   Stage / time Content Teaching & Learning Activity Rationale Remarks Set Induction ( ± 8 m ) Instructions : Teacher brings realia of some fruits and play a blindfold games with kids. Questions : 1. What does it smell like? 2. Can you describe how it feels? 3. Is it smooth? 4. Is it round or oval? 5. It is big or small? 6. Is it heavy or light? 1. Teacher brings a few fruits to class. 2. Teacher gets the pupils into two groups. 3. Teacher blindfold one group and other group gives descriptions of the fruits. 4. Teacher gives the fruits to the blindfolded pupils and asks them to guess the name of the fruits. - To have the pupils attention for the lesson. - to know the previous knowledge about fruits - Appendix 1 - realia of fruits - questions & answer session. - Speaking Skill - Giving & getting information Presentation Step 1 ( ± 15 m ) Teacher draws a table on the board and pupils fill it in with the different characteristics of the fruits. Teacher reads aloud the paragraph and pupils listen. 2. Pupils repeat after the teacher. 3. Teacher discusses the paragraph with the pupils. - to ensure that pupils understand the paragraph. - to emphasize - Appendix 3 - Reading texts - Reading Skill - speaking skill - grammar   Presentation Step 3 ( ± 10 m ) Quiz Between 2 Groups Some Of the Wh-questions that will be asked is : 1. What type is the watermelon plant? The watermelon plant is a type of creeper. 2. How does the plant looks like? The plant has shallow and wide roots. 1. Teacher divides the pupils into two groups for the quiz. 2. Teacher gives some sentences about the water melon plant and a mahjong paper to paste the sentences. 3. The groups which selects and arranges the sentences correctly will be the winner. 4. Teacher checks the answers with the pupils. - getting information by scanning the factual texts. - Appendix 4 - CCTS - Listening Skill & Speaking Skill Wh  –  questions Wh  –  questions words Practice ( ± 10 m ) 1. Teacher gives exercise to the pupils based on the pupils level. a) Excellent Group: Pupils rearrange the information given in a paragraph. b) Can Do Group : Pupils number the sentences given and write at the correct picture. c) I am trying Group : Pupils match the pictures with the correct sentences. 1. Teacher distributes the worksheets to the pupils based on their level. 2. Teacher explains to the pupils about their tasks. a) Excellent Group : Pupils rearrange the information given in a paragraph. b) Can Do Group  : Pupils number the sentences given and write at the correct picture. c) I am trying Group  : Pupils match the pictures with the correct sentences. 3. Pupils complete their activities as homework. - to evaluate the pupils understanding on today ’ s lesson. - Appendix 5 - worksheets - Individual work
