  • 2. <ul><li>What were Roman laws like? </li></ul><ul><li>Dealt with serious eg murder and not so serious eg fighting </li></ul><ul><li>Also dealt with cleanliness – homeowners responsible for street outside house </li></ul><ul><li>Children learnt the laws at school </li></ul><ul><li>Who tackled crime? </li></ul><ul><li>No police force </li></ul><ul><li>Patrols introduced 6A.D. By Augustus – 5000 soldiers to stop riots; 7000 vigiles to patrol the night and put out fires; 9000 Praetorian Guards to protect the Emperor </li></ul><ul><li>No crime investigation – only a direct response to crime </li></ul><ul><li>Therefore very little crime solved </li></ul><ul><li>Could a criminal get a fair trial? </li></ul><ul><li>Minor crimes in a Magistrate’s Court </li></ul><ul><li>Victim had to get the criminal and the evidence </li></ul><ul><li>Serious crimes go before judge and jury </li></ul><ul><li>Innocent until proven guilty </li></ul><ul><li>Punishments </li></ul><ul><li>To deter others – therefore BRUTAL </li></ul>
