Should suicide be legal? Suicide is defined as the act of intentionally ending one's own life.Taking your own life by your own hands. One of the risk factors are depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and many more. Some suicides are caused by stress and problems in life that is not being talked to others or not seeking for help to solve it. According to the Global statistics presented by save.org nearly 800,000 people die because of suicide in the world each year which is roughly one death every 40 seconds. Suicide is the 2 nd  leading cause of death for those who aged 15-24 years old. Based on asfp.org, on 2017 firearms were the most common method of death by suicide with accounting for 50.6%, second is suffocation which is 27.7%, folowed by poisoning which is 13.9% and other methods which is 7.8%. According to the wikipedia. Before the suicide Act 1961 was a crime to commit suicide. Anyone who attempted and failed could be prosecuted and imprisoned. The families of those who succeeded suicide could be imprisoned too. The Church of England was revaluating it’s stance on the legality of suicide and decided counseling, therapies and prevention would be better before the event take place rather than imprison the person or the family members as it would just add a huge amount of despair. Thus, suicide should be legal rather than treating it as a crime and have them spend their lives behind the bars that would just add up a huge amount of despair to the person. Some may disagree at the idea just like Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, both philosophers who had formulated the view that anyone who took their own life given to them showed the utmost disregard and disrespect for the will and authority of God. They also encourage the Church to treat suicide as a sin and a crime that should be punished for those who attempted it and failed while the families of those person who succeeded suicide will be punished too. However, this idea will not do any good to the person who attempted it and failed because he/she will not have the chance to change his/her life because they will be imprisoned and it will only push them to the idea of killing themselves. Some may also state that if suicide is illegal then the rate of suicide will drop down and no one would do it because they will be  punished if they failed to commit suicide or their family will have to take the burden if they succeeded. This point somehow makes sense but it won’t change a mind of a suicidal person especially if the person is depressed because they cannot think right. It won’t even kick into a mind of a suicidal person because despair has eaten them. It is clear that making suicide illegal and punish people who attempted it but failed would not do any good and will only make the situation worse than ever. It will not lessen the number of suicidal person in the world and it is not the solution to help them. In Singapore a committee reviewing the Penal code has called for attempted suicide to be decriminalised or be illegal. They said that the criminal justice system is not ideal for people who is suicidal. Treatment is way better than prosecution and it is the appropriate response for people who need help. They also wished to change other laws such as giving the police the power of forced entry to prevent loss of life and arrest people who attempted suicide, not to be punished but referring them for medical asessment. However the committee said that encouragement of suicide should continue to be an offence. All in all suicide should be legalized in the whole world but that doesn’t mean that it is being encouraged in every part of the worl d. The punishment will not result to anything good and the prosecution of the family will only give them more grief and emotional hurt for losing a loved one, having them in jail will not lessen the pain they already felt when their loved ones died. A suicidal person cannot think properly when they are in a vulnerable state and when they are already ready to kill themselves and having them regret it in jail when they failed suicide will only make them more depressed and will only try to kill themselves again. Therefore we need to help someone we know or even a stranger to stop suicide and have them consult a therapist rather than pitying them. It is best if you listen to them and not say anything because that will lessen their burden. Even though it is legal, it doesn’t mean that it is the rightful and the only way to do.   “When you feel like giving up, just remember the reason why you held on for so long.” And “If you are looking for a sign not to kill yourself, this is it.” Life is good maybe not all the time but surely it is not bad all the time. You just have to push through it.
