Y U STUDY MEMES: AN INTERNET LOL IN THE DIGITAL CULTURE  An Undergraduate Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the English Department College of Social Sciences and Humanities Mindanao State University General Santos City In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in English JIRAH PAROJILLO CANILAO June 2018  MSU  –  GSC CSSH ENGLISH DEPARTMENT iii Canilao, Jirah P. “Y U Study Memes: An Internet LOL in the Digital Culture”. Unpublished Undergraduate Thesis of Bachelor of Arts in English. Mindanao State University, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, English Department, General Santos City. June 2018.  Abstract This research study aimed to determine that internet memes shared common characteristics using Limor Shifman’s communication orient ed typology of memes which includes form, content and stance. Subsequent to this, Incongruity Resolution Model was used in generating the memes’ embedded humor and discussed how memes propagate well online. The data used in the study are the Top 10 Popular Memes of 2017 retrieved from meme’s official data website This included (1) Y U No Guy , (2)  Annoying Facebook Girl , (3) Mocking Spongebob , (4) Roll Safe , (5) Salt Bae , (6)  Pennywise in the Sewer  , (7) Meryl Streep Shouting Your Favorite Lyrics , (8)  Overly Attached Girlfriend , (9) Distracted Boyfriend Meme and (10 ) Sly Duck. These memes, despite their varying linguistic style and humor, have Shifman’s memetic dimensions present in each of the chosen sample. There are alterations that may occur which are merely influenced by the caption and the audience. Also, just like the traditional jokes, internet memes have setup and punchline in which the more incongruent the caption is, the more humor occurs. The success and popularity of memes, also, depends on their generated humor. In order to survive the digital culture, the humor of the memes have to reach the general public. Its success rate depends on how the internet participants imitate or reject if from their social media platforms.
