thousands of kids as a varsity high school coach. Theenergy and passion these players bring to the field is contagious . . .it’s really tough for me to have a bad day at work! One thing that differentiates my program from many others is thatwe don’t focus on winning — believe it or not, accruing victories is nota major goal. Certainly we want to win, but winning, we believe, is abyproductof development. Asaresult, weemphasizethreethings: play hard, execute the fundamentals we’ve learned, and have fun. This focus may sound a bit strange given the success of our programover the last four decades. After all, we’ve won seven state titles inColorado, including five in a row in the late 1990s and finished runnerup five other years. And, a couple of years ago I celebrated my 600thcareer high school victory. Even though it’s fair to describe Cherry Creekasawinningprogram, ourmindsetisondevelopment. Whenwedo that, winning takes care of itself.Consider one year my team won 51straight games. It started in thespring high school season and we cruised through most of the summer 1 A Perfect Season
