Thank you :)  1 University Blida 2 Faculty of Arts and Languages _ Department of English Academic Year: 2016/2017 Module: Reading and Writing Teacher: Ms. BEN BELLAL Level: Second Year LMD Groups: 5 & 6  Objectives:  by the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:    Write a strong introduction for an essay using different patterns to grab the reader’s interest .    Identify and write thesis statements. Contents: 1.   The Thesis Statement 2.   Writing Thesis Statements 1.   The Thesis Statement: B. The second task  of the introductory paragraph can be accomplished by a carefully crafted thesis statement. THE THESIS STATAMENT IS THAT SENTENCE OR TWO IN YOUR TEXT that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. Many writers think of a thesis statement as an umbrella: everything that carry along in your essay has to fit under this umbrella.    The thesis statement is also a good test for the scope of your intent. Narrow your subject and be focused.    The thesis statement should remain flexible until the paper is actually finished. If we discover new information in the process of writing our paper that ought to  be included in the thesis statement, then we’ll have to rewrite our thesis statement. On the other hand, if we discover that the thesis statement appears to include things we haven’t actuall y addressed, then we need to limit that thesis statement.  The Structure of an Essay in English. Thank you :)  2    The thesis statement usually appears near the beginning of a paper. It can be the first sentence of an essay, but that often feels like a simplistic, unexciting beginning. It more frequently appears at or near the end of the first paragraph.    A thesis statement should not be a sentence that only gives a fact about the topic: “In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer months are warmer than the winter months”  this is not a strong thesis statement because it cannot be discussed or argued about.    A thesis statement should not state two sides of an argument equally: “There are advantages and disadvantages to suing nuclear power.” This could be a topic sentence, but it is not a thesis statement. It gives two sides of an argument without giving a clear opinion of support or disagreement. It could be revised like this: “Although there are some advantages, using nuclear power has many  disadvantages and sho uld not be a part of our country’s energy plan.”    This is a strong thesis statement. It clearly gives the writer’s opinion about nuclear power. 2.   Writing Thesis Statements: How to connect the thesis statement and the essay: The paragraphs in the main body of an essay should always explain the thesis statement. In addition, each paragraph in the main body should discuss one part of the thesis. Look at the following thesis statement. The topics to be discussed are underlined: To create a successful advertisement, it is necessary for advertisers to answer three questions: what are we selling? Who are we selling it to?, and How can we make people want to buy it? Possible topic sentences for each paragraph in the main body: 1.   The first step in creating a successful advertisement is to completely understand the product that is being sold and how it can be used. 2.   A second important part of creating an advertisement is deciding who is expected to buy the product. 3.   Finally, a way must be found to create an ad that will make people want to buy the product.  The Structure of an Essay in English. Thank you :)  3 Thesis Statement Pitfalls: A thesis statement is the most important sentence in your essay, so write it with special thought and care. Avoid these common problems: Problem1:  The thesis statement is too general (x)  A college education is a good investment. ( ✔ ) A college education is a good investment for four reasons. Problem2:  the thesis statement makes a simple announcement. (x)  I am going to write about sport injuries. ( ✔ ) Avoid sports injuries by taking a few simple precautions. Problem3:  the thesis statement states an obvious fact. (x)  The internet is a means of communication. ( ✔ ) The explosion of the internet has had both positive and negative consequences. Thesis Statement Examples: a.   Example of an analytical thesis statement:  an analysis of the college admission process reveals one challenge facing counselors: accepting students with high test scores or students with strong extracurricular backgrounds. The paper that follows should:    Explain the analysis of the college admission process.    Explain the challenge facing admissions counselors. b.   Example of an expository (explanatory) thesis statement:  the life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers. The paper that follows should explain how students spend their time studying, attending class, and socializing with peers. c.   Example of an argumentative thesis statement:  high school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity and global awareness.  The Structure of an Essay in English. Thank you :)  4 The paper that follows should present an argument and give evidence to support the claim that students should pursue community projects before entering college. Activity 1: consider the three thesis statements in each case and make your comments: Case1:  compare and contrast the reasons why the north and south fought the Civil War in America. Thesis statement1 : the North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different. Thesis statement2:  while both sides fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery, the North fought for moral reasons while the south fought to preserve its own institutions. Thesis statement3:  while both southerners and northerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners focused on the oppression of slaves while southerners defended their own right to self-government. Case2:   write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn.   Thesis statement1:   Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.   Thesis statament2: in Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore. Thesis statement3:   through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave civilized society and go back to nature. Activity 2: analyze the following thesis statements: Step1:  locate the main topic and the subtopics in each of the following thesis statements. Step2:  draw a box around the topic. Step3:  underline the subtopics. Step4:  draw a circle around the words or punctuation marks that introduce the subtopics.  The Structure of an Essay in English.
