We are working on adding and subtracting decimals this week. We started by using manipulatives to represent addition and subtraction problems using the place value disc model. Please ask  your child to show you this at home if you’d like to have a better understanding. We then moved into the semi-concrete understanding of this concept by drawing these models and finally are learning the abstract method which is the old fashioned way all of us are probably most comfortable with...standard method. It has been great to see our kiddos make the connection  between the concrete and abstract way of solving these problems. Be on the lookout for a progress check this  week on this skill. If you’d like a better view of what your child is doing in math, please have them bring home their math notebook as we do not utilize worksheets as much. Also, remember to check the Tuesday folder for progress checks to see how your child is doing in class.  WIN TIme has started and we are currently focusing heavily on math. Your child has been placed into a group  based upon what they need during this time. The groups are as follows: Number Devil is a higher thinking mathematical concept book involving abstract math concepts. The enrichment group will be completing engaging math projects focusing on current math concepts from this year. The reteach group will engage in various games and strategy learning to enhance and  build upon any gaps they have with the current standards. Lastly, we have a group receiving intensive, small group instruction to help support their learning. Our classes have been learning about the Great Plains this week and how natives in this region used natural resources as a means for survival.  We even viewed clips of natives deconstructing a buffalo to use its parts for cooking bags, teepee construction, and utensils. We are making our Great Plains artifacts this week as well. Later this week, we will be looking into the Southeast cultural region. Each region we have covered their geography, climate, natural resources, and artifacts the natives there used.   We are still using the poem, “The  Wreck of the Hesperus” to analyze theme, figurative language, and word meaning. We will also be drafting an article of the event where students get to demonstrate their understanding of the poem in a creative way. Your child also made a theme poster covering the poem and many will be displayed in our halls. Several students really took time to create meaningful illustrations and used the notes and quotes strategy effectively. We will be next moving on to another poem called, “Casey at the Bat” to continue this unit before we take a summative assessment over the material. Popcorn and Capri Sun is this Friday! BizTown - October 30th--Make sure you’ve filled out a  background check or have one on file if you are planning to chaperone.. This trip will be here sooner than we realize. Flyers come home next week. Fall Break   is Sept. 30- Oct-7 (Fall Break and Bullitt Day) CASE Testing Windows:  Window 1: 1st - 5th, October 16-October 23 CASE Testing is replacing MAP testing within the district. Students will now take this assessment that shows their mastery on grade level standards only. There were many factors that played in the district's decision to switch tests, but mainly years of data was not showing correct correlations for students, especially at the high school level. Please contact us at the following email or through Remind:  Beach Blast   was today and the classes had such a great time. Thank you to everyone who donated balloons, milk jugs, towels, or your time. These events can not take place without the help of our wonderful parents. A school can plan anything it wants, but  without your help our plan would never come to life.  We started drafting on our small seed moment using a special object. Students were hopefully inspired by our mentor text of Saturdays and Teacakes and will be able to create a piece of vivid  writing using great description and strong emotions.  We will be focusing on adding sensory language to our  writing as the week continues. Please ask your child  what they are writing about and request to see it once they are finished. If your child has a change in transportation, please write it on a separate piece of paper other than the agenda. We must copy the agenda so the note can be kept on file. Flashbacks - This week your child will receive flashbacks in Social Studies and Math. A flashback is just a spiral review of material your child is expected to know and complete independently. In Social Studies most of the flashbacks this week will entail information they should know by the time they enter the 5th grade. As the year progresses, they will contain info we’ve taught in class. Flashbacks are the perfect way to see if your child is understanding the curriculum or not. We offer students assistance with flashbacks meaning they are allowed to seek me out for help or guidance on flashbacks on or  before Wednesday. If we suspect any child guessing or  just marking any answer down just to be done, they will probably miss Dolphin Dive (held monthly) to complete their work. With all the assistance we give to students, failure is not an option. Math flashbacks are over the lessons we've already taught this year. Flashbacks are given on Monday and due Friday.   We check them in class to help with the review. Mr. Johnston is requesting feedback regarding communication on ENEWS. If you are not signed up for ENEWS (the school's digital newsletter) please email Kim Durbin at to get signed up.
