  MBSE (model-based systems engineering) is a key enabling technology for Systems Engineers who seek to transition from traditional Systems Engineering processes that are document-based and code-centric to more efficient and effective processes that are model-driven. MBSE seeks to reduce rework and errors through the use of a central model that is accessible to all those involved in the engineering process. In traditional document-centric systems engineering, documents are the repository of information. The use of information requires the movement of information between documents, typically as part of a manual process. This can lead to the introduction of errors. In addition, the information is likely to be resident in multiple locations and therefore it is hard to keep the information synchronized. MBSE strives to overcome these issues by using a central repository that holds all the information needed by the systems engineers. This information is made accessible to all those involved in the design and management of the systems engineering, becoming the central source of information. And while MBSE is not a panacea for all of an organization’s issues, it is a proven approach for improving productivity because it’s a single system model that is authoritative, durable and unambiguous. MBSE also promotes communication, produces more seamless gate transitions, and documents/charts are generated from the mode, which reduces time and the expense of making slides from gate reviews. MBSE is also well-known for improving quality, reducing risk and addressing complexity by enabling a system model to be viewed from multiple perspectives, and to analyze the impact of changes. Complexity is often the root cause of systems engineering challenges. By using MBSE’s visual repre sentation of the system, relationships between different parts of the system are easier to see and manage. A common misconception about MBSE is that it replaces traditional systems engineering. It does not. It’s more like MBSE formalizes part of systems en gineering. MBSE combines traditional methods and best practices with rigorous modeling techniques. In practice, System Markup Language (SysML) based models have gained the most prevalence in MBSE application. These models are system relationship models and are useful for showing relationships among system functions, requirements, developers and users. These models support 3 aspects of systems engineering:    System Functional Flows (i.e., System Architecture)    System Requirements Traceability    System and Organizational Process Flows There are several organizations that have been working to advance the SysML modeling capabilities and applications.
