  Mechanics of Solids-I Simple Stresses  Introduction ã Mechanics of materials or Mechanics of solids is a branch of applied mechanics that deals with the behavior of solid bodies subjected to various types of loading. ã The solid bodies considered in this Course include bars with axial loads, shafts in torsion, beams in bending, and columns in compression. ã Modern Mechanics have many fields and/or types e.gquantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, engineering mechanics, automotive mechanics etc.  Introduction ã When an external force acts on the body the body tends to undergo some deformation. ã Due tocohesion between the molecules, the body resist this deformation. ã The resistance by which the material opposes the deformation is known as strength of material.  Introduction ã Within certain limit (i.e. elastic range) the resistance offered by the material is directly proportional to deformation. ã  Also within this limit the resistance is equal to the external applied force. ã But beyond the elastic range the resistance offered by the material is less than external applied force. ã In such cases the deformation continues, until failuretake place.
