  Chapter I THE PROBLEM Introduction The Philippine Daily Inquirer (2011) stresses that Philippines remains to be the bastion of Christianity in Asia with 86.8 million Filipinos — or 93 percent of a total population of 93.3 million — adhering to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Apart from being number one in Asia, the Philippines ranks fifth in the world, hosting four percent of those 2.18-billion Christians. Of the Filipino Christians, 81 percent are Catholic, 11 percent Protestant and one percent belongs to other Christian groups. The remaining seven percent of the Philippine population are non-Christian. Indeed, Philippines has the number one spot in terms of Christianity in Asia but here is the question, do people in this country truly execute Christian Living? Filipinos were known to be Maka-Diyos  and it is evident in conducting some of the Christian celebrations like Lent season, Easter and Christmas, through going to Church, and even living in a Christian way like praying and helping to the least favored. However, some of Christians still do not know the true essence of becoming one. Today, racism and separation of married couples are very rampant in our society which opposes in being a Christian. Racism, as defined by Cole (2016) refers to a variety of practices, beliefs, social relations, and phenomena that work to reproduce a racial hierarchy and social that yield superiority, power, and privilege for some, and discrimination and oppression for others. Marital separation on the other hand was the decision made by married couples who  2 vowed with solemnity and respect to the procedure of the Church but still decided to disunite. We cannot deny the fact that these are really happening in our society. To respond to one of the societal needs, there are few schools that offers Religious Education in their curriculum which helps to preach the Good News of Christ and which aims to create disciples. One of those schools is the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University which redesigned its education system making Religious Education as the core of the curriculum. This means that Gospel values are central in the teaching of all subjects, and that they give importance to the spiritual training of all students by integrating value formation in academics, co-curricular activities and programs. Lota (2012) defined Christian Living Education (CLE) as the education in faith through interdisciplinary, deliberate, systematic and sustained activities. Religious instructions are designed to assist students in going through the process of learning and living their faith life. CLE aims to lead the students to a more mature Christian view of human life and progress, grounded in a spirit of prayer and an ideal service in keeping with the social principles of the Gospel. It is a big help to the community to know deeper and to strengthen their faith through this program. The program emphasizes the three dimensions of Christian faith; the Doctrine, the behavioral and spiritual dimension. It is a good start to preach the good news of Christ at an early age. As what CDC (2016) emphasizes, Early Childhood Education improves the cognitive or social development of children. ECE interventions can improve all children’s developmental trajectories and act as a protective factor against the future onset.  3 The researcher was motivated to conduct this study due to the recent factors that people facing today. This study aims to discover the pupils' concept, factors influencing these concepts and their practice of Christian Living. Research Problem  This study described the pupils' concept and praxis of Christian Living. Specifically, it answered the question, what are pupils' concepts and praxis of Christian Living? Scope and Delimitation The study described the pupils' concepts and their practice of Christian Living. The participants of this study were the selected 18 grade 6 catholic pupils of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University-Integrated Basic Education Department Lagao Campus. It looked into the pupils' concept, the factors that influence those concepts and their practice of Christian Living. The study was delimited only to the pupils' personal generalization and application of Christian Living that affected their emotional attributes such as their experiences, reactions, as well as their different perceptions and beliefs. It also considered the availability of the pupils and the researcher to conduct the study.  4 Significance of the Study  This study is relevant as it provides administrators and teachers a better understanding of the diverse pupils' perception and practice of Christian Living as it was included in the curriculum. The output of this research can also be a valuable collection of different opinions and application of pupils understanding towards Christianity. This study will serve as the basis of the future researchers and as a guide to their related future study. Also some Religious sectors can look into this study on how pupils nowadays perceive and practice Christian Living which was affected by the different factors of practicing it. In addition, it can make a major contribution to the society to establish right relations among people within nations and between nations of the world through the varied beliefs and culture that people has. The selected 18 pupils of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University acquired better understanding on how they view Christian Living which can affect their daily living in terms of social relationship and education. It developed their open-mindedness since pupils have different view of Christianity and since they practice different customs or culture. Their concepts can be used in strengthening their identities and give them opportunities to be ready for every challenges that they may encounter. Definition of Terms  The researchers has defined some terms conceptually and operationally so that readers may have a better understanding of its use in the study.
