Assoc. Prof. NAZAN MAKSUDYAN Istanbul Kemerburgaz University Department of Sociology Faculty of Arts and Sciences Mahmutbey Dilmenler Caddesi, No:26, Bağcılar - İSTANBUL Phone: (1520) RESEARCH My principal research interests lie in the field of late Ottoman social history of children and youth. My scholarly work is in close contact with gender, sexuality, and non-muslim minorities. In my PhD dissertation, I aspired to provide a social history of the orphans and destitute children in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by focusing on children's agency and testimony, as part of the efforts of reformulating and expanding the subject, scope and actors of history-writing. I have investigated the highly publicized nature of childhood in the face of nascent nationalisms, missionary aspirations and changing state welfare regulations and provisions. My current research focuses on the relatively understudied realm of social history of the First World War in the Ottoman lands. Following my particular expertise and interest, I dwell upon children and youth as legitimate partakers, actors and witnesses of Ottoman political action, state and society, and generally the experience of war. I also have a parallel research on women suicides in Istanbul during and after the war.
