ã   Personality refers to a combination of long lasting and distinctive behaviors, thoughts, motives, and emotions that typify how we’ve react and adapt to other people   ã   A theory of personality is an organized attempt to describe and explain how personalities develop and why personalities Social cognitive theory    Personality development is shaped primarily by three forces 1.   Environmental conditions (learning) 2.   Cognitive personal factors 3.   Behaviors Which all interact to influence how we evaluate, interpret, organize, and apply information Social cognitive theory grew out of the research of a numbe of psychologists, especially Albert Bandura 1986,2001 COGNITIVE PERSONAL FACTORS Nelson mandela was born to an African tribal royal family and he was expected and trained to be a leader someday. Mandela’s family encourage him to be self confident, have dignity, and if needed be ruthless and determined to achieve his goal. Cognitive factors include our beliefs, expectations, values, intentions, and social roles Personal factors include our emotional makeup and our biological and genetic influences Cognitive personal factors influence our personalities by affecting what we think, believe, and feel which in turn affect how we act and behave Ex: Mandela viewed the world from the stand point of someone trained to lead and help his people. These kinds of beliefs gave mandela the strength and determination to fight for freedom  BEHAVIORS Behaviors include a variety of personal actions such as the things we do and say. Just as behavior influences our beliefs, so too does our environment influence both. Ex : the political and social behaviors that he enaged in to help his people achieve freedom in turn strengthened his belief that apartheid (discriminatory pratices against blacks) was morally and politically (Mandela) ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Include our social, political, and cultural influences as well as our particular learning experiences Just as our cognitive factors influence how we perceive and interpret our environment, our environment in turn affects our beliefs, values, and social roles Mandela lived in a society based on apartheid wich meant strict separation of the races, limited opportunities for non Whites and the fostering of intense racial hatred. These envirmental factors certainly affected mandela’s personality development   We can assume that living in such an oppressive environment strengthened mandela’s determination to get a law degree and to devote his life to obtaining freedom for all Bandura’s social cognitive theory :  1.   Language ability    Powerful tool for processing and understanding information that influences personality development    We turn this information into ideas, beliefs, values, and goals   shape, guide, and motivate our behaviours    Ex : ANC talks about teaches and values fighting for freedom. This information motivates its members to become assertive, self confident, and determined 2.   Observational learning (observe parents, brothers, sister, peers, friends, and teachers)    Watching, imitating, and modeling   provides own reward for developing some belief or performing some behaviours    Ex : observational learning allows the young black men   imitate and model the personality characteristics of adult role models in the ANC 3.   Purposeful behaviour    Our capacity to anticipate events, plan ahead, and set goals influences our personality development, growth, and change    In fighting for freedom, the young black men will organize, plan marches, and develop political strategies   encourage them to become responsible, confident, and energetic 4.   Self analysis    Powerful internal process   to monitor our own thoughts and actions    Deciding to change our goals or values   affect our personality development    Young black men use self analysis to check their personality progress as well as to reward themselves for meeting goals of the ANC
