Science Center Opening September 2016  If you are interested in a career in forensics, the biomedical industry, teaching chemistry (High school chemistry teachers are in high demand!) or working as a laboratory chemist, then you should consider majoring in chemistry! Our program can also prepare you for graduate school. Westeld State’s faculty includes specialists in several areas of chemistry, biochemistry, and related elds, allowing you to explore many areas of this fascinating subject. Current chemical instrumentation includes UV-Visible, uorescence, atomic absorption, and FTIR spectrometers as well as gas and liquid chromatographs. The Department is excited to be part of the design phase of a new STEM building which will house our chemistry labs. The labs will be state-of-the-art and contain the latest chemical instrumentation. The projected completion date is fall 2016. Class of 2018 Chemistry Majors will be the rst to access the new upper-level chemistry labs during their junior and senior years. Compared to other institutions, our low student- to-faculty ratio means that you can get plenty of individual attention. The Chemistry major includes 24 credit hours of required foundational coursework plus 30-33 credit hours of upper-level courses. Students planning to seek teacher licensure must complete GNSC 0330 Science, Technology and Society and the required education curriculum in addition to the courses listed below: Foundational CourseworkCHEM 0109 General Chemistry I (4)CHEM 0111 General Chemistry II (4)MATH 0105 Calculus I (4)MATH 0106 Calculus II (4)PHSC 0125 Physics I (4)PHSC 0127 Physics II (4)Upper-Level CoursesCHEM 0201 Organic Chemistry I (4)CHEM 0203 Organic Chemistry II (4)CHEM 0211 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (3)CHEM 0305 Physical Chemistry I (3)CHEM 0307 Physical Chemistry II (4)CHEM 0311 Instrumental Analysis (4)CHEM 0313 Biochemistry (4)CHEM 0350 Theoretical or Experimental Research (3)CHEM 0389 Senior Seminar in Chemistry (1)GNSC 0239 Current Topics in Science Seminar (1) A minor in chemistry is very useful for anyone majoring in biology, criminal justice, or environmental science. Some departmental majors have completed internships in the community as part of their undergraduate programs. Recent placements have included Bay State Medical, Spectrum Analytical, the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab, and the Springeld Science Museum. The Department also sponsors the General Science Club, which has arranged for talks on campus and organized eld trips.
