J   I    Ā     N  G   S    Ū       Well-to-do Ji ā ngs ū  is the envy of its neighbours because of its lush, wet landscape and fer-tile topography. Because of its abundant agriculture, it’s been dubbed the ‘land of fish and rice’ since ancient times. Situated on the east coast bordering the East China Sea, it’s one of China’s most densely populated provinces and also one of the most prosperous. Ji ā ngs ū  owes its wealth to the ancient waterways of the Yangzi River and the Grand Canal, which served as the main systems of transport in early times. Ji ā ngs ū  made much of its fortune through silk and salt, which was panned off its low-lying marshy coast. The Grand Canal slices its way from northern Ji ā ngs ū  into the lower reaches of the flour-ishing Yangzi River Delta. The canal, once navigable all the way from Hángzh ō u in Zhèji ā ng province to B ě ij ī ng, has largely silted up but still remains alive in southern Ji ā ngs ū . Some of the province’s most historical cities sit by the canal, including the vibrant commercial centres of S ū zh ō u and Yángzh ō u. The Yangzi River flows through the south of Ji ā ngs ū , serving as an important trading route between the provincial capital of Nánj ī ng and Shàngh ǎ i.If you’re interested in Chinese history, Ji ā ngs ū  has plenty to offer. Cosmopolitan Nánj ī ng has served as China’s capital and has some fascinating museums and historical attractions to explore. S ū zh ō u and Yángzh ō u are famed for their elegant gardens and fine silk, while the ancient river town of Wúx ī  serves as a base for scenic Lake Tai. The well-preserved canal towns of Tóngl  ǐ   and Mùdú offer close-up views of a China fast disappearing.  Ji ā ngs ū   江苏 HIGHLIGHTS   Join in an operatic sing-a-long at the fascinating Kunqu Opera Museum  ( p306 ) in S ū zh ō u   Pay your respects to the ‘father of modern China’ at the impressive Sun Yatsen Mausoleum  ( p283 ) in Nánj ī ng   Experience the magic of stone and water by taking a ferry ride on beautiful Lake Tai  ( p301 )   Discover the enchanting plants, bamboo and rockery of S ū zh ō u’s classical gardens ( p303 )   Liberate your libido at the Chinese Sex Culture Museum  ( p311 ) in the charming canal town of Tóngl  ǐ    TaiLakeTóngl¨ S¥zhŸuNánj¸ng   POPULATION: 74 MILLION    www.seu.edu.cn/EC/english/js.htm 279 © Lonely Planet Publications
