BEST Foundation for a Drug-Free Tomorrow. All rights reserved. www.best.org A Perspective on Surveying StudentAttitudes and Behavior  The following survey contains questions regarding whether or not students haveever used various drugs their current use !atterns and their attitudes and beliefsabout drugs. t is essentially the instrument given to students during the initialvalidation of #ro$ect A%E&T. t is crucial that each survey be anonymous 'no student names or identi(cationmar)ed on it* and that students be guaranteed con(dentiality. +o one should beable to tell which survey goes with which student or be able to loo) over ashoulder as answers are written down. f the survey is carefully administered andif students really feel assured of anonymity and con(dentiality you will get agood !icture of the e,tent of drug use among young !eo!le in your school orcommunity. This information should hel! you diagnose the nature of the !roblemand decide what to do about it. f you re!eat the survey in subsequent years youwill also be able to monitor trends over time and see whether drug use isincreasing or decreasing among dierent ages and genders. Though results of the survey !rovide valuable information the res!onsesalonewill not indicate the level of eectiveness of a s!eci(c drug !revention !rogram. The reason for this is that no matter where you live or what !rograms you areusing drug use rates increase as youth get older. The rates will be higher ineighth grade than in seventh and in seventh than in si,th. Therefore if you loo)only at survey res!onses from youth that have !artici!ated in a s!eci(c !rogramover time you may be tem!ted to conclude that the !rogram is ineective due toincreasing drug use rates. n actuality the !rogram may be very eective in that it may have substantially  slowed down the rate of increase com!ared to what would have ha!!enedwithout the !rogram. To determine this you will need to be able to com!are druguse rates in schools or communities that are using a s!eci(c drug !revention!rogram versus similar schools or communities that are not.  BEST Foundation for a Drug-Free Tomorrow.
