[EURME 302] B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION Mechanical Engineering III SEMESTER    MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY-I (Effective from the admitted batch 2008  –  09) Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks. Answer all units choosing one question from each unit. All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNIT-I 1. a) What is pattern? How does it differ from the actual component to be made from it? Explain. What are the functions of a  pattern? Discuss 6  b) What is a molding sand? How it differs from a core sand? Explain the various properties of molding sands. 6 OR 2. a) What is investment casting? What are the main materials used for investment pattern? Explain the investment casting process in detail with neat sketches. 6  b) Sketch and explain the constructional and operation of hot chamber die casting machine. Discuss the advantages, limitations and applications of the process. 6 UNIT-II 3. a) What is a riser? Describe the functions of a riser. 4  b) Differentiate between pressurized and unpressurized gating systems with reference to applications. 4  b) What are the functions served by the pairing basin in a sand casting? Explain them. 4  OR 4. a) From which source do blowholes appear to srcinate most frequently? Explain in detail. Also suggest suitable remedial measures for the same. Also discuss the various types of casting defects by low pairing temperatures. How they may avoided. 7  b) Explain with suitable examples and sketches. i) Progressive solidification and directional solidification. 5 UNIT-III 5. a) With neat sketches, describe the various types of flames obtained in aw oxy-acetylene gas welding process. Also give their applications. 6  b) What are the problems encountered with the use of coated electrodes? Explain how these can be taken care of during the welding process. 4 c) Explain why is DC power supply used in carbon arc welding  process. 2  OR 6. a) Describe the principle of oxy-fuel gas cutting. 3  b) What is filler metals? What is its importance in welding  process. Name some filler materials and give their compositions. 5 c) Explain the differences between TIG & MIG welding  processes. 4 UNIT-IV 7. a) Explain why a flux is not required for resistance spot welding  process. 3  b) Explain weld joint designs for laser beam welding process. 4 c) Distinguish between brazing and soldering from the point of view of the filler metals used, applications and the strength of  joint obtained. 5  OR 8. a) Explain the various steps in any brazing process. 5  b) What should be the good characteristics of the spot welding electrodes? Explain. 4 c) Explain the working principle of Thermit welding process, with the help of chemical equations involved. 3 UNIT-V 9. a) Discuss the effect of friction in open die and closed die forging  processes. 4  b) Differentiate between coining and embossing. 4 c) Explain with a neat sketch impact Extrusion process. 4  OR 10. a) List the various operations generally performed in a sheet-metal shop. Distinguish between bending and drawing. 6  b) Define and explain the term extrusion. With the help of neat sketch explain ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ extrusion processes.  6 [08/IIIS/109]
