If you like science and enjoy sharing a sense of discovery, consider strengthening your resume with a focus on science.Kids are naturally curious. You’ll learn how to help capture this curiosity and help them see how much fun science can be. To achieve excellence in science education at the middle and high school levels, we need to help elementary school children hold on to their natural curiosity and love of science. The need for excellence in science education begins in elementary school. Science teachers are currently in great demand. Elementary education graduates with a strong foundation in the sciences are rare and have a distinct advantage when seeking employment.  Within the General Science  Major Elementary Licensure (Grades 1-6)  Make a difference.  Teach Science! Okay, I’m interested! Which science courses do I need to take in addition to the education coursework required for initial teaching licensure? Introductory science courses: Astronomy ASTR 0101 (3)Environmental Biology BIOL 0102 (4)Human Biology BIOL 0104 (4)Introduction to Chemistry CHEM 0101 (4)Physical Geology (w/ Lab) GEOL 0101 (4)Historical Geology GEOL 0106 (3)Introduction to Physics PHSC 0101 (4) Upper-level courses: Meteorology GARP 0230 (3)Sci, Technology & Society GNSC 0330 (3)Senior Sem. General Sci. GNSC 0383 (1)Methods of Sci. Ed., P-6 GNSC 0360 (2)Current Topics Seminar GNSC 0239 (1)  And, just one more! Students must also take one additional upper-level course, either  ASTR 0349 (3) or GEOL 0347 (3), bringing the total number of hours in the major to 39. These “integrated physical science” courses apply the background that students have developed in chemistry and physics to more advanced topics in the Earth and Space sciences. The ASTR 0349 course has focused on the chemical evolution of the Universe during the past few offerings, while the topics for the GEOL 0347 course have included geologic dating, paleoclimatology, the geology of  Massachusetts, and geochemistry. Integrated Sci.: Astronomy ASTR 0349Integrated Sci.: Geology GEOL 0347  This concentration includes the course “Science,  Technology and Society.”  What is it? Science, Technology and Society was developed for the General Science major and created with you in mind.  The course description says it all:“A broad survey of the history of science, the interplay between scientific and technological advances, and the impact of science and technology on society. The course will include an in-depth look at the scientific and technological aspects of issues such as: the rapid growth of information technology, 21st century transportation, energy and mineral resources (including the environmental problems associated with energy usage), the development of military weapons systems, and the exploration and colonization of the solar system.”  Interested, but planning on a Liberal Studies major? Consider including “General Science” as one of your areas of concentration. The General Science minor could serve as a model for such a program OR you could design your own!
