WEG Group 2-Pole Turbine Generators Bearings and Seals Bearing Sleeves Precision machined split type bearings aredesigned with a spherical seat foralignment. After removing surface siliconand graphite, the ductile iron bearingshells are electrolytically etched by theKolene process. The shells are then tinnedand babbitted by centrifugal casting whichinsures a strong metallurgical bondbetween the ductile iron and the babbitt.Only tin based babbit with high resistanceto corrosion is used.The bearings incorporate a generous loadsupporting area in the lower sleeve.Carefully designed clearances insure properlubrication and cooling. Adequate drainsare provided for end leakage. The bore iselliptical to prevent oil whip. A bearingtemperature detector is inserted in thelower half of each bearing in the loadcarrying area. These detectors monitorbearing temperatures and may be used toactuate alarms or shut-down circuitry.   Lubrication The amount of oil entering the bearingis metered so that just the right quantitycomes in contact with the journal. Theoil flows over the bearing surface in afan-shaped pattern. Oil flows outwardtoward each end of the bearing where it iscollected in drain grooves and dischargedinto the bearing housing. If any oil passesthe shaft seals which are located outsidethe drain groove, it is thrown into asecondary drainage area by a shaft slinger.Metal labyrinth seals pressurized by rotorfans prevent leakage of oil and vapor fromthe housing. Bearing Sealing The bearing housings are part of thebearing bracket structure and arecompletely external to internal air passagesof the machine. Each bearing housing hasthree labyrinth type seals that arepressurized with high pressure air from theshaft mounted blower. Along with slingersmachined in the shaft, an oil seal isprovided at the end of each journal toprevent oil from escaping along the shaft.The inner chambers of the oil seals arevented to the atmosphere. An air seal isprovided at the entrance to the machineto prevent foreign material or oil fromentering the machine.
