  THE FOAMING CAPACITY OF SOAPS by  HARSHAAVARDHAN.d OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT  : The objective of this project is to compare the foaming capacities of different samples of soaps. REQUIREMENTS  : 100ml conical flasks with corks, 20ml test tubes, 100ml cylinder,50ml measuring cylinder, test tube stand, weight box and stopwatch. Different samples of soaps, distilled water. THEORY: There is no quantitative method for the determination of foaming capacity of soap. However, the foaming capacity of different soaps can be compared qualitatively by the following way. Solutions of different soaps are prepared by dissolving their equal volumes of distilled water. These solutions are shaken vigorously to produce foam and then they are allowed to stand. Time taken for the disappearance of foam is measured for different  samples. Longer the time taken for the disappearance  of foam in a given sample of soap, greater is its foaming capacity. PROCEDURE:    0.5 g of each of the different samples of soap is weighed.    Each of these weighed samples is dissolved in 50ml of distilled water separately, in different conical flasks. The solution obtained is labelled as 1, 2, 3, 4…….      20ml test tubes are taken and 10ml distilled water is added to each of them. Then 1ml of different soap solutions are added separately in different test tubes and correspondingly the test tubes are marked as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.    Test tube no.1 is corked tightly and shaked it vigorously for 1 minute. The test tube is placed in the test tube stand and started the stop watch immediately. Time in which the foam  just disappears is noted.    Similarly, the time for the disappearance of foam in the other test tubes are noted and recorded the observations . OBSERVATIONS  :  Weight the each soap sample taken = 0.5g Volume of distilled water taken for preparing solution of each sample =50ml TEST TUBE NO. BRAND NAME OF THE SOAP TIME TAKEN FOR THE DISAPPEARENCE OR THE SOAP 1. Dove 11‟42”   sec 2. Lux 3‟28”   sec 3. Cinthol 9‟40” sec   4. Santhoor 15‟32” sec CONCLUSION: The soap for which time taken for the disappearance of foam is maximum has maximum capacity and is the best quality soap among the soaps tested.
