Teaching Psychology <ul><li>Aims: </li></ul><ul><li>To give tips/advice based on over 25 years of teaching psychology in schools, sixth form colleges, F.E & the University sectors. </li></ul><ul><li>To give you the opportunity to talk about your experiences and to focus on the next academic year. </li></ul>
  • 3. Teaching Psychology <ul><li>What is it like to be 16? (email, mobile phones, boy/girlfriends,parents, teachers, social life). </li></ul><ul><li>What is your biggest resource? (Your students) - Example: Soaps for Approaches & Treatments of Abnormality & Relationships topic areas). </li></ul>
  • 4. Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Ask for help. </li></ul><ul><li>Share ideas & resources within your department. </li></ul><ul><li>Team teach (if possible). </li></ul><ul><li>Form links with other schools/colleges in your area. </li></ul>
  • 5. Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Who is the most important person in your everyday working environment? (Cleaners, Caretakers, Support Staff, Line manager…) </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to try something new. </li></ul><ul><li>Never predict behaviour. (Even the class from hell can surprise you!) </li></ul>
  • 6. Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Try to get to know something about all of your students. </li></ul><ul><li>Always establish clear but fair discipline. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not worry or panic if you don’t stick to or complete your lesson plan. </li></ul>
  • 7. Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Always have a plan B. </li></ul><ul><li>Christmas – end of term quiz. </li></ul><ul><li>Classroom appearance – does it need a makeover? </li></ul>
  • 8. Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Know your syllabus. </li></ul><ul><li>What about your needs? (Staff support/training). </li></ul><ul><li>What about your relationships with work colleagues/management. </li></ul>

Teaching Psychology…. <ul><li>Are you bullied or do you see yourself as a victim in the workplace? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you suffer from Teacher Stress? </li></ul><ul><li>What are your current ‘strengths’ & ‘weaknesses’ as a teacher/lecturer? </li></ul><ul><li>Prepare, prepare, prepare. (You can always improve). </li></ul>
