  • 1. STRESS MANAGEMENT Stress management is the attempt to cope with the negative effects of stress through reduction of the stress response. This may be aimed at the physiological effects of stress (anti-anxiety drugs or biofeedback) and the psychological effects of stress (stress inoculation and hardiness training). Stress management is often based on changing the person’s perception of the stressor and/or increasing the individual’s perception of control. PHYSIOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO STRESS MANAGEMENT Techniques that try to control the body’s response to stress by reducing physiological reactivity. For example, anti-anxiety drugs decrease the “fight or flight” response such as high blood pressure, increased heart rate etc. Biofeedback is another technique, which works by training the participant to recognise their heightened physiological reactivity and reduce it through relaxation exercises. PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO STRESS MANAGEMENT Techniques that try to control the cognitive, social and emotional responses to stress. They attempt to address the underlying causes of stress, such as faulty thinking and disproportionate emotional responses (overreactions or underreactions). Psychological techniques (such as relaxation, stress inoculation, hardiness training) are designed to work by changing people’s perception of the stressor and/or increasing the individuals perception of control Answer the Exam Questions related to this page and then tick once completed: 1 1. Explain what is meant by physiological and psychological approaches to stress management. (3 marks + 3 marks) 2. Outline what is meant by stress management (6 marks) 1

  • 3. Learning outcomes: All students should be able to _Distinguish between physiological and psychological approaches to stress management _ Describe drug and biofeedback therapies _ Describe SIT and hardiness training Most student should be able to _Describe the mechanisms of action of different drugs _ State strengths & weaknesses of drugs, biofeedback & psychological stress management techniques _ Explain the role of control in reducing stress Some students should be able to _Evaluate different methods for reducing and controlling stress _ Compare and contrast different methods for reducing and controlling stress TASK: GROUP PRESENTATIONS (you will have 1 class session and then your independent time to do this) 1. You MUST (using all the resources provided) plan and conduct a 20 minute presentation on the biological and psychological approaches to stress management (including evaluation) 2. You SHOULD a. work AS A TEAM b. prepare handouts for the class c. be vigilant in your presentation (if you think you wont have time to cover ALL the material in your presentation make sure you have accompanying handouts that does cover it all) 2. You COULD a. conduct additional research b. set the class work/activities during your presentation (although bare in mind you only have 20 minutes) c. Use exam questions to guide you on what the specification covers Follow YOUR GROUP INSTRUCTIONS carefully and refer to the assessment sheet for guidance on your assessment criteria, use the organization sheet to help you start GROUP 1 CRITERIA: Physiological 1) You must consider the Bio-feedback method of stress management and the evidence on which this is based 2) Discuss both strengths and weaknesses of this method of stress management (you could do a simulation of a set up of how this works using some props) GROUP 2 CRITERIA: Physiological 1) You must consider the Drug Therapy method of stress management and the evidence on which this is based 2) Discuss both strengths and weaknesses of this method of stress management (You could go a bit extra biological and use diagrams of nerve cells etc to explain how this works) GROUP 3 CRITERIA: Psychological 1) You must consider the Stress Inoculation Training method of stress management and the evidence on which this is based 2) Discuss both strengths and weaknesses of this method of stress management (You may want to do a role play of what happens in the different phases using a real life example) 1) GROUP 4 CRITERIA: Psychological 1) You must consider the Increased Hardiness method of stress management and the evidence on which this is based 2) Discuss both strengths and weaknesses of this method of stress management (You may want to do a role play of the different ways 2 people (high and low hardiness respond to 3 a stressor using a real life example)
