Be able to answer the following questions: </li></ul><ul><li>1) What is flooding? </li></ul><ul><li>2) What principle is flooding based on? </li></ul><ul><li>3) Give three examples of anxiety responses caused by phobias. </li></ul><ul><li>4) How is flooding done? </li></ul><ul><li>5) Give an example of how flooding works. </li></ul><ul><li>6) What are the potential problems with this treatment? </li></ul>

Systematic desensitisation <ul><li>Watch the clip ‘Exposure treatment of therapies’. </li></ul><ul><li>What different types of phobias did he talk about? </li></ul><ul><li>What is cognitive behaviour therapy? </li></ul><ul><li>Flooding – elevators – get straight in! </li></ul><ul><li>Graded exposure (systematic desensitisation) – gradually gets more difficult </li></ul>

Systematic desensitisation <ul><li>Read page 151 and answer the following questions: </li></ul><ul><li>7) How is systematic desensitisation different to flooding? </li></ul><ul><li>8) Explain how systematic desensitisation is done. </li></ul><ul><li>9) Make sure you are aware of the key terminology – anxiety and hierarchy of fears . </li></ul><ul><li>10) Tom has a fear of water. How would flooding be used to treat Tom’s phobia? </li></ul><ul><li>11) How might systematic desensitisation be used to treat Tom’s fear of water? </li></ul>

Construct a hierarchy for someone who is scared of an animal <ul><li>Construct a hierarchy of fear for someone who has a phobia of an animal (choose one specific one) </li></ul><ul><li>See page 151 to help you. </li></ul><ul><li>And finally…begin to think about the ethics of therapies used to treat phobias. </li></ul>
