  • 1. Drug Therapy : Strengths 1. They enable people to get on with their lives, jobs and relationships. 2. They dispense with the need for extended hospitalisation, padded cells and straitjackets. 3. They enable patients to respond more rationally to psychological therapies. 4. They have success rates at “benchmark” and above. (e.g. schizophrenia 80% , depression 75% )
  • 2. Drug Therapy : Weaknesses • Tolerance – needing more of the drug to get the same effect • Addiction/Dependence – needing the drug, either physically, or for a feeling of psychological well being • Withdrawal – sometimes coming off the drug produces symptoms far worse than the original ones
  • 3. • Side effects – can cause drowsiness, dehydration, lack of concentration, etc. Antipsychotic drugs for schizophrenia can produce symptoms similar to Parkinson’s Disease • May need to take a new drug to control the side effects – the “swallow a spider to catch a fly” effect • The drugs only treat the symptoms, not the underlying cause
  • 4. • Sometimes patients are given the wrong drug , or the wrong dosage • A “Quick Fix” – often patients will take the drugs and then “put up and shut up” about the REAL problems in their lives, instead of changing them • “Pharmacological Straitjackets” – are the drugs used to keep the patients quiet and “zombified” mainly for the benefit of relatives and staff of hospitals and nursing homes?
