Try this <ul><li>Imagine your self trying to look up a telephone number in the phone book, how many digits do you hold in your mind in one go? </li></ul><ul><li>How do you extend the amount of time you hold the number in your head while you dial? </li></ul><ul><li>What word comes before “on the man” in Bohemian Rhapsody? </li></ul><ul><li>What program did you see on TV yesterday? </li></ul>

What do we remember <ul><li>The first thing we were told (primacy) </li></ul><ul><li>The most recent thing (recency) </li></ul><ul><li>Anything which is unusual or stands out, is rude, includes sex or we find humorous </li></ul><ul><li>7 items (+/-2) Miller's magic number 7 (1956) </li></ul><ul><li>Stories – the gist of them </li></ul><ul><li>Emotion and experiences with lots of emotion </li></ul>

Multi store Model of memory <ul><li>This model gives an idea as to why we may only be able to hold 7 things in our memory in one go </li></ul><ul><li>The short term memory only holds a small amount of information for a very short period of time (up to 30 seconds) </li></ul><ul><li>Retrieval involves serching for an item in LTM and then holding it in STM until it is used </li></ul>

How Can We Improve? <ul><li>Method of loci – familiar route </li></ul><ul><li>Make up a story connecting the items </li></ul><ul><li>Group the items and link them in a new way </li></ul><ul><li>Use a mnemonic e.g. ROY G BIV, Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain </li></ul><ul><li>To remember numbers try a rhyming method. E.g. 1 = bun, 2 = shoe </li></ul><ul><li>Link an image with a word – useful for learning new languages. </li></ul><ul><li>Use the file card system and keep refreshing on a regular basis </li></ul>
  • 9. Does it work <ul><li>Try the task again with new words and come up with a story to link each word in a sequence or as a group. </li></ul><ul><li>Or </li></ul><ul><li>Try grouping the words in a novel way – come up with about 4 -7 catagories </li></ul>

What have we being testing? <ul><li>First we tested the capacity of you long term memory without any assistance </li></ul><ul><li>Then we tested the capacity with a mnemonic </li></ul><ul><li>What is wrong with this experiment? </li></ul><ul><li>How could we have improved it? </li></ul><ul><li>Now collect some samples of your own – use the 2 word lists given here and the same method (they can be presented on paper) </li></ul><ul><li>Write up the aim, method and the results </li></ul><ul><li>Describe your participants without mentioning their names </li></ul><ul><li>Bring this work next week so that we can share results and produce our first practical report. </li></ul>
