AIMS & HYPOTHESES <ul><li>We are going to investigate the effects of imagery on memory (Craik & Lockhart – Levels of processing). </li></ul><ul><li>What would the aim be? </li></ul><ul><li>Hypothesis: - The group of participants shown words and pictures of items will recall more of them than the group just shown words. </li></ul><ul><li>Null Hypothesis: - Any difference in the number of items recalled is due to chance. </li></ul>

PLANNING <ul><li>IV = Words and images </li></ul><ul><li>DV = Number of items correctly recalled </li></ul><ul><li>Independent Measures Design: - Group A will be show just words and group B Words and corresponding images. </li></ul><ul><li>Opportunity Sample: - 10 males and 10 females, split into two equal groups </li></ul><ul><li>Ethics: - What ethical issues could arise? How will you deal with them? </li></ul><ul><li>Design of stimulus material: - We need to devise a list of 20 common words and corresponding images </li></ul>
  • 4. Procedures <ul><li>Standardised Instructions: - (Group A) </li></ul><ul><li>Thank you for agreeing to take part in our research. In a moment you are going to be shown a list of words. Your task is to memorise them. Please don’t confer and don’t write anything down until you are told to. Please complete this task in silence, so as not to distract the other participants. </li></ul><ul><li>Have you any questions? </li></ul><ul><li>Please write down all the words you can remember without conferring. </li></ul>

  • 16. Debrief <ul><li>Thank you for your co-operation. This experiment was testing the idea that imagery aids memory recall. It was expected that the group that were given words and images would remember more items, than the group who just had words. Do you have any questions? </li></ul>

Results – Inferential Statistics <ul><li>This investigation was a test of difference and utilised an independent measures design because a difference between two groups (words and words and images) was being looked for. The experiment generated ordinal data in the form of number of items recalled, so the appropriate statistical test was the Mann Whitney U Test. </li></ul><ul><li>Calculate Mann Whitney U test. </li></ul><ul><li>Write up the results section using the booklet as a guide. </li></ul>
