  • 1. Name………………………………………………………. Tutor Group…………………………………………… Welcome to A2 Psychology! In year 13 you will cover two more modules. These are G 543, ‘Options in Applied Psychology’ and G544, ‘Approaches and Research Methods in Psychology’ G543- there are 4 options, each with 4 sections. Two Options are taken. We are studying Health and Clinical Psychology and Forensic Psychology. The exam for the options is 1.5 hours and you must do 2 questions (out of 4) for each option. For G544 the 1.5 hour exam has two sections. Section A has compulsory questions on research methods, and Section B has two questions – one on perspectives (approaches) and one on issues. You must answer one of these questions. In the first weeks of your A2 course, we will be working towards G544, by carrying out two practical projects and writing them up.
  • 2. Practical 1- An Experiment Read the passage below: Last year I was reading a number of news articles about people and their memories. There was the world wide hunt for the identity of a man who had lost his memory. He remembered nothing, not his name, address, family or friends, what his job was, or even how he came to be wandering around in a city. A few days later there was a report of a woman who could not forget anything. Given a date in the last 20 years she could recall all the details of where she was, what she was wearing, who she met, what she ate and how she felt. Added to this every year there is the world memory championships where people compete to see who can recall the longest sequence of playing cards or random words using a variety of strategies to enhance their memory. Questions which occurred to me are: • Do men forget more than women? • Is the stereotype of men remembering facts such as football scores better than women true? • Do women remember emotional events more accurately than men? • Does visualising items from a shopping list help in recalling them later? • Do some people have a better memory for material presented as pictures rather than words? • Would it be easier to learn lines for a play by reciting them rather than writing them out? You are required to design a practical project to investigate one of the above research questions. It must be an independent measures design and you must plan to collect at least ordinal data. (Ordinal data means you must be able to give each pp a score e.g. by counting the number of items correctly recalled).
  • 3. Writing up your project You must write up your project using standard headings or Sections. These are: Abstract (Summary). You write this last, after you have analysed your results. It’s a brief summary of the study as a whole, and it goes at the start so people can get an idea of what you did and found without reading the whole thing. (Do not write more than 150 words for your abstract). Aims- What research question are you aiming to investigate? Hypotheses (alternative/positive and Null) Is the Hypothesis One or two tailed? Why did you choose to write a one/ two tailed hypothesis? Method- Write this under the following subheadings • Sample (who you used as participants) • Sampling (how you got your sample) • Materials (a list of everything you used –even pencils etc) • Conditions and controls (The I.V, D.V and how you controlled for C.Vs • ,Procedure (what you did- logically, from first to last) • Include a note as to how ethical considerations were dealt with, and make a note of any briefing, consent or debriefing statements you used. Results -Record your results using a Table of Raw Data. Draw a graph if suitable e.g. a bar chart of mean recall in the two conditions. Keep your data. Later you will analyse it using a statistical test. Discussion-What do the results dhow? Was the hypothesis supported? Now evaluate your study considering any relevant points including ecological validity, ethics, reliability, strengths and weaknesses of the method, limitations of the sample used. Suggest how the study could be improved with reference to some of these points. Explain why these would improve the study and suggest how making the changes might affect the results.

Practical 2- A Self Report “It’s going to be a good day, because on my way to school I saw two magpies”. “I wouldn’t walk under that ladder if you paid me” “ I wouldn’t wear a ring on my wedding finger unless I was engaged or married”. A lot of people are very superstitious. They might not be able to say where they got these beliefs from, but they act on them. A research question which occurred to me is that females seem to take more notice of these things than males. You are required to design a suitable questionnaire or set of interview questions which try to investigate this question. Things to consider: • A suitable number of questions • Some open and some closed/limited choice questions, so you can collect a final score (ordinal level data) for each participant. • Questions which are valid • Ethics of your study Start your planning here: Who to use, sampling, sample questions………………………………..
