Evaluation of self-report methods <ul><li>Strengths </li></ul><ul><li>It is possible to access people’s thoughts and feelings. </li></ul><ul><li>Allows researchers to find out what people would do in certain situations, without having to set them up. </li></ul><ul><li>Limitations </li></ul><ul><li>What people say they do in certain situations may be different to what they would do. </li></ul><ul><li>Participants need to possess a number of qualities (e.g. honest, articulate, confident, good memory) for the results to be reliable. </li></ul><ul><li>Participants responses may be due to the researcher: Social desirable responses/ narrow responses. </li></ul>

Summary <ul><li>Methods of self-report require participants to answer questions. </li></ul><ul><li>Questionnaires use pre-set questions, which are usually written down and answered privately. </li></ul><ul><li>Structured interviews also use pre-set questions. </li></ul><ul><li>Unstructured interviews base questions on interviewee’s responses. </li></ul><ul><li>Open questions allow participants to answer freely, whereas closed questions offer fixed responses. </li></ul><ul><li>The main strength of self-report methods is they give access to thoughts and feelings, but this relies on participants being able or prepared to express them. </li></ul>
