  • 1. COGNITIVE INTERVIEWS Your task is to find out whether cognitive interview techniques help people to remember more details about a particular day than basic free recall. Your materials: use the booklet pages 9 – 11, and possibly the powerpoint from today’s lesson which you will find on the KLP. You will need to record your findings in this booklet. Your learning outcome: to have put these principles into practice, to understand how and why they work, and to remember them later for revision! What you have to do: choose someone to interview. This can be anyone in your household or family, or a friend. Now pick a fairly recent day which they are likely to remember something about – like Christmas last year, their birthday party or a day out. Anything is fine as long as it’s somewhat memorable. Next,ask them to free recall (ie without prompting from you, in their own words) what they can remember about the day. Make some brief notes in the box over the page. Now take a break and spend a little time planning your questions for a Cognitive Interview about the same day or event, using the principles of Fisher et al. The remaining boxes can act as prompts to help you, and it’s really important that you complete them all as you will share your sheets with someone else. Now carry out your CI, noting what they recall this time.

  • 3. When planning your interview, use the checklist below and the boxes on the left. Afterwards, go back and tick the checklist boxes (if appropriate!), and complete the boxes on the right.
