• 1. 3.1 Sex and Gender- Core Theory- Biological Theory

Objectives: To be able to:

- outline the role of chromosomes in typical gender development;

-outline the role of gonads and hormone production in typical gender development;

Starter: Write down the difference

between sex and gender

 • 2. What makes us male or female?

*Chromosomes

The pair of sex chromosomes dictate whether the foetus will be male or female.

The female chromosome pair is XX

The male chromosome pair is XY

It might help if you remember that males wear Y fronts and they are the ones with the Y chromosomes
 • 3.

*(Babies can be born with atypical sex chromosmes. For example some baby boys have an extra X chromosome (XXY). Interestingly, such boys grow up to have more feminine traits as well as more female looking bodies. This shows that chromosomes can have a significant on gender)

 • 4. At about 6 weeks, a gene on the Y chromosome , the SRY gene, causes the gonads (sex organs) of the embryo to develop as testes If the embryo has no Y chromosome, it will not have the SRY gene, without the SRY gene, the gonads will develop as ovaries. The testes and ovaries begin to produce different levels of sex hormones which affect gender development.
 • 5.

*Gonads= The sex organs

*Hormone= A chemical produced by the body that affects cells and organs

 • 6. Match up the characteristics of the male and female hormone

Aggression

Superior mathematical and spatial skills

Breast growth

Sensitive

Superior verbal skills

Facial Hair

Menstruation

Deep Voice

Muscle growth

 • 7. Hormones- a chemical produced by the body that affects cells and organs

Testosterone

Aggression

Superior mathematical and spatial skills

Facial Hair

Muscle growth

Deep voice

 • 8. Hormones- a chemical produced by the body that affects cells and organs

Oestrogen (and progesterone)

Sensitive

Superior verbal skills

Menstruation

Breast growth

 • 9. Where can we see evidence of this? What happens when we inject females with testosterone?
 • 10. Where can we see evidence of this? What happens when we inject males with testosterone?
 • 11. Where can we see evidence of this? What happens when we inject males with oestrogen?
 • 12. Where can we see evidence of this? What happens when women have more oestrogen in their body?
 • 13. Copy and complete the diagram by filling in the gaps Embryo is conceived with different sex hormones At 6 weeks gonads change Gonads produce hormones Hormones affect the brain Hormones affect behaviour MALE FEMALE _____chromosomes Gonads become _________________ Main hormone is _______________ Brain better for certain skills eg ___________ Behaviour is more masculine eg________ _____chromosomes Gonads become _________________ Main hormone is _______________ Brain better for certain skills eg ___________ Behaviour is more feminine eg________
 • 14.

Using the flow diagram, write a paragraph explaining how chromosomes, gonads and hormones affect sex and gender.

You have 10 minutes

 • 15. Summary

The biological approach believes that an individual’s gender is decided at the same time as their sex is decided!!!!!!!!!!
