• 2.
 • 3. AO1: knowledge and understanding

Candidates should be able to:

(a) recognise, recall and show an understanding of psychological knowledge

(b) select, organise and communicate relevant information in a variety of forms.

I think of this as ‘describing’

 • 4. AO2: application of knowledge

Candidates should be able to:

(a) analyse and evaluate psychological knowledge and processes

(b) apply psychological knowledge and processes to unfamiliar situations including those related to issues

(c) assess the validity, reliability and credibility of psychological information.

I think of this as ‘evaluating and commenting’ and ‘applying knowledge’

 • 5. AO3: how research works

Candidates should therefore be able to:

(a) describe ethical, safe and skilful practical techniques and processes, selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods

(b) know how to make, record and communicate reliable and valid observations and measurements with appropriate precision and accuracy, through using primary and secondary sources

(c) analyse, interpret, explain and evaluate the methodology, results and impact of their own and others’ experimental and investigative activities in a variety of ways.

I think of this as ‘referring to research methods’

 • 6. Exam questions at AS

These will assess all 3 criteria : AO1, AO2, and AO3

So that you can select what to write, try to look at questions and decide what they are asking for

Does the question want you to:

Recall and describe something?

Evaluate something and/or apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar situation?

Refer to some aspect of research methods?

Or does it want a combination of these?

With questions for 8, 10, or 12 marks, asking ‘Discuss’ or ‘Outline and evaluate’ – you must give 50:50 descriptive:evaluative

 • 7. Exam questions at A2

These will assess all 3 criteria : AO1, AO2, and AO3

On PSYA3 and PSYA4 you will be writing essay type questions worth 25 marks (except for the Research Methods part of PSYA4)

Of these 25 marks, 9 are for AO1, 12 for AO2 and 4 for AO3

In your AO2 you must use points from Issues, Debates or Approaches in every essay to access the higher mark bands

Your AO3 will come from commenting on the strengths & weaknesses of the research methods used to investigate the phenomenon in question

AO2 and AO3 are combined in the mark scheme to total 16 marks, so the ratio of AO1 to AO2/3 is roughly 1/3 to 2/3

In other words: 1/3 of your essay needs to be AO1 and 2/3 needs to be AO2/3

Aim to write approx 600 words in total for your essay, 200ish of AO1 and 400ish of AO2/3 (depending on how much you can write in the time)
