  • 2. Situational Factors of Obedience: Studies to supportMilgram’s Original Study:Procedure Volunteers from the general public took part in an experiment at a famous American University They were told they were taking part in a study about punishment and memory They met the ‘learner’, a Mr Wallace, who was actually a colleague of Milgram Mr Wallace had been briefed to give lots of wrong answers Real participants were told the task was to get Mr Wallace to give correct answers by giving him electric shocks The shock increased in strength if Mr Wallace gave a wrong answer If the participant hesitated to give the electric shock, the experimenter (who was dressed in a white lab coat) would say, ‘Please go on’Results Every participant went up to the level of ‘intense’ shock which was 300volts 65% of participants administered the highest ‘danger’ level of 450volts (There was no electricity in the experiment, Mr Wallace just acted as if the shocks applied, while in fact he was safe and well).Hofling et al:Procedure Studied nurses on a psychiatric hospital in the USA Participants were 22 staff nurses on night duty Nurses were phoned by an unknown ‘Dr Smith’ He told them to give 20milligrams of a drug called Astrofen from a bottle in the medicine cabinet to a particular patient The bottle had a label saying maximum daily dosage 10milligramsResults All but one nurse who had been phoned obeyed the fake Doctor’s orders and went on to administer twice the safe level of the drug (the drug was harmless) Nurses prepared to break the rules, on the authority of a doctor even though they knew it would break hospital rules & procedures
