(EM241) Course : Manufacturing Processes Laboratory Course Code : MEM564 LAB SHEET NO: 2 Manufacturing Processes Laboratory 1.0 TITLE: Screw Thread Measurement   2.0 OBJECTIVE   To measure the Major Diameter, the Minor Diameter and the Effective Diameter of a Screw Plug Gauge using Floating Carriage Diameter Measuring Machine. 3.0 INTRODUCTION (Background & Theory)   a) Major Diameter    Referring to the illustration: If the micrometer reading over Standard Cylinder = R1 the micrometer reading over Screw Plug Gauge = R2 the diameter of Standard Cylinder = D1 therefore, Major Diameter of Screw Plug Gauge, Dmajor = D1 + ( R2 - R1 )     Manufacturing Processes Lab – MEM564 / LS2/Ziyadi Rev. 00-2013 b) Minor Diameter    Referring to the illustration: If the micrometer reading over Standard Cylinder and Core Prisms = R3 the micrometer reading over thread and Core Prisms = R4 the diameter of Standard Cylinder = D1 therefore, Minor Diameter of Screw Plug Gauge, Dminor = D1 + (R4 – R3)   c) Effective Diameter    Referring to the illustration: If the micrometer reading over Standard Cylinder and wires = R5 the micrometer reading over screw thread and wires = R6 the diameter of Standard Cylinder = D1 therefore, the diameter under the wire, D3 = D1 + ( R6 – R5 )  Hence, the Effective Diameter Deff = D3 + P  where P is the difference between the Effective Diameter and the diameter under the wires as shown below. The P value is a constant depending on the diameter of the wires (d), the pitch (p) and the type of screw thread, it is found as follows: Metric threads (600) P = 0.86602p - d Whitworth threads (55o) P = 0.96049p -1.16568d British Association threads (47 1/2o) P = 1.13634p -1.43295d     Manufacturing Processes Lab – MEM564 / LS2/Ziyadi Rev. 00-2013 4.0 APPARATUS   i) A Floating Carriage Diameter Measuring Machine ii) A set of Core Prisms (Steel Prisms) iii) A set of calibrated screw thread measuring wires (Wire Cylinders) iv) A set of Metric Cylindrical Standards v) A Screw Plug Gauge 4.1 INDUSTRIAL APPARATUS  Apparatus in the manufacturing technology. State the difference between Faculty laboratory equipment and in the Manufacturing industry. 5.0 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE  A briefing session will be conducted prior to students carrying out the measurement on the specimen. Please take note of the procedures for setting up the specimen on the adjusting table. Movements can be made through micrometer adjustment. Parameters to be measured on the specimen are: 1) Major Diameter 2) Minor Diameter 3) Effective Diameter Corrections   i) Rake Correction due to tilt of wires on account of rake, C. ii) Compression Correction, e. Note The value of the Rake Correction and the Compression Correction for screw plug gauge can be found from reference book (e.g. Practical Engineering Metrology, by K.J. Hume ,  Chapter 7) 6.0 RESULTS & DATA ANALYSIS  1. Take three readings for each of the parameters and tabulate your results. 2. Calculate the percentage of error for each of those parameters. 3. Evaluate the average data by compare to theoretical value by refer to Metric Standard table for screw thread (ISO 6H). 7.0 DISCUSSION OF RESULT 8.0 CONCLUSION Summarize the outcome of the experiment base on the results and analysis. Relate this to the objective. 9.0 RECOMMENDATION  Recognize a need for improvement / modification in the system. (At least 5) incorporate ideas in the experimental work or set-up. 10.0 REFERENCES  List references to method and related studies in the appropriate style.
