The conventions that I found through my research gave me valid rules and regulations that I followed whilst making my very own magazine. For example, on the cover of every magazine I noticed that the title of the magazine was at the top of the page and very bold, there were big noticeable colours and pictures that will attract a wide range of people.

However, I also tried to make my front cover seem edgy and unique by using graphic features and editing the typeface and cover image using Photoshop. I also came up with the idea that each issue will have a different colour scheme. In this particular issue, the colour scheme is green, purple and black as it matches the colours of the outfit the cover model is wearing. I have decided that the colour scheme will be different for each issue which could be a competition to other music magazine because it will be a signature style for my magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
 • 3.

The music magazine I developed, represents a slim range of social groups. It represents young people between the age of 14-24. The category of people that listen to typical music for teenagers and R‘n’B/Hip Hop music, and that can be described as polished and alluring. I believe it shows them in a positive light and tries to encourage them to be better as a good influential channel reaching out to them. This is because the magazine does not involve or mention any sort of violence, gangs or the gun/knife culture that most people of that age group are associated with or engaged in but rather, it shows successful people in the music industry and public eye, and commemorate their achievements. I also believe that it represents them as a culturally diverse and multicultural group of young people that are united in the type of music they listen to and what they are interested in. This is because many different groups and artists are featured in the magazine. The Artists involved and spoken about in the magazine are not just from the UK but also high profile artists from the US and different parts of the world which draws in more audience as there’s music and artists who are not the typical interest of teenagers around.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
 • 4.

The target audience for my music magazine are young people between the age of 14 to 24. I believe that this group of people will be more attracted and interested in the type of music that my magazine publicise. People of these ages are mainly interested in popular music of the moment and the magazine I have created is based on the music genre that is most popular out at this particular point in time which are R‘n’B, Hip-Hop and Funky based . I found out from prior research that people of this age are fans of mainstream music. In terms of a specific audience, as in gender, race….etc, I do not believe there are certain groups the magazine appeals to only but I do think that the contents of the magazine draws in female and male readers as there’s everything for everyone. I’m mainly looking to attract people who live in the cities of U.K, focusing particularly in London in particular as they are more likely to be interested in the articles, artists and issues that are featured in my magazine.

The front cover of the magazine however might draw in female readers in terms of the colour used as purple is usually associated as being a “female” colour and also, the picture on the front cover of a male artist/model will mainly appeal to women as the might buy the magazine due to their attraction to the cover image.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
 • 5.

I attempted to attract my chosen target audience by including information in the magazine that I believe they might be interested in such as artist interviews, information about American stars, music reviews and listings of the latest clubs and events.

I thought very carefully about what is to be featured in this issue and what my target audience will want to read about and from this, I decided on what my cover image will look like shortly after.

I had to consider the image I will use, if it will be a picture of one person (male or female) or a group of people, the type of shot that will be used, the setting and location and if this will be suitable to attract my target audience and finally if it relates back to the main article in the magazine.

This issue features an interview with a new artist called “Featurez”, who is mainly recognised in the south of England as his music appeals more to people of that particular area. This will be appropriate as these are the articles that my audience want to read about which I discovered through prior research. This is an example of how I have incorporated my magazine to fit my target audience as these people are the niche my magazine will cater for. For the cover image of my magazine, I decided to use the image of whom the issue’s main cover article is about.

How did you attract/address your audience?
 • 6.

From using different types of technologies, I have learnt that it is not very easy to make certain aspects such as text and images perfect. For example when working on Photoshop, it was quite difficult cutting round the edges of a person’s body to take out the background. The lines come out wonky and jagged which makes the image look weird and distorted. However I have tried to take my images on a white background so it makes it easier to cut and crop the images. I have also learned that you limited when it comes to looking for fonts that go with the name of the magazine and for the rest of the normal text throughout the publication. You will have to search for a while to look for the perfect title that has to go with the name and the type of audience you are trying to attract. In order to make sure I get everything right, I have sent out questionnaires and set up polls on my blog to see what type of names they think are better, the colours that should go with the title and what type of features they would prefer to have in the publication.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
 • 7.

Looking back at the preliminary task, I believed it helped me tremendously when I started the planning and creation of my music magazine. When I had to create a sixthform magazine for my school, I had to think about what issues my target audience will want featured in the magazine so I had to incorporate anything I believe sixthform students will want to hear about in the magazine, this really help me out a lot in terms of choosing my target audience for the music magazine and trying to find out information and topics that will keep them interested and entertained. Also. As I had feedback from students at the sixthform about my preliminary task prior to its completion, I knew exactly where I needed to improve and what was done right which in turn helped me when creating my music magazine.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
