Instructions contained in this report will supercede or modify instructionscontained in OEM manuals only where specifically stated in this report. If any question arises from conflicting or contradictory instructions contained in anymanuals, JanzAir Consulting should be consulted before commencing to use thoseinstructions. 2.0INTRODUCTION The ATEX C406-1 is an Automatic Fixed (AF) type ELT, which is permanently fixed to theaircraft in a protected location and activates automatically upon impact. The beacon remainsattached to the aircraft after impact. Since the ELT Transmitter is usually located in the tailof the aircraft, a Remote Switch is normally required and located in a position visible by thecrew. The ELT Transmitter status may be partially monitored and controlled using thisRemote Switch.Once activated the beacon transmits emergency location signals; burst of digitally encoded406 MHz signals, received by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network for alerting Searchand Rescue (SAR) teams, and a continuous 121.5/243 MHz signals for closer proximitydirectional tracking. On some installations as an option, a programming dongle is installed to automatically program specific aircraft identification information into the Transmitter Unit. This programming dongle is housed in the connector terminated at the ELT transmitter, and whenconnected to the ELT transmitter automatically downloads the programmed 406 MHzmessage into the ELT Transmitter.
