This meeting was a follow up of the 44th session of the International Conference n Education ICE) and the Regional Consultation of Asia and the Pacific Member States held during the Conference n Geneva, October 1994. The idea of a regional network had been derived rom recommendations nd suggestions ut forward during various regional meetings nd workshops rganized y UNESCO and its Member States namely: The Regional Workshop on International Education Materials and Methods (Bandung, Indonesia, August 1992), which recommended he formation of an Association of Educators for International Education. The Regional Workshop on Enhancing Humanistic, Ethical, Cultural and International Dimensions of Education NIER, Tokyo, February 1994), which recommended he formation of a network of institutions and interest groups o work in the areas of values education and international education. The Meeting of Experts rom Asia and the Pacific Region o Prepare or the 44th Session f the ICE (Tagaytay, Philippines, March 1994). which recommended hat within the aegis of UNESCO-PROAP. an Asia-Pacific Network be formed of institutions and individuals interested n promoting he goals of education or international understanding, eace, human rights, democracy nd sustainable evelopment. Following its formation, APNIEVE decided o offer UNESCO echnical advice and support n the implementation of its activities n the field of international education nd values education. APNIEVE plans to produce a series of publications n keeping with its aim to promote and develop nternational education and values education or peace, human rights, democracy and sustainable evelopment, hrough inter-country co-operation mong ndividuals and institutions working in these fields. This first volume in UNESCO-APNIEVE Sourcebook eries is for teacher education and ertiary education. It brings together he experiences nd reflections of experts rom the UNESCO Member States of Asia and the Pacific Region who believe hat their region s well endowed with shared cultural and human values. When identified, these values can serve as vehicles or unity, solidarity and peace, as well as an instrument or democracy nd sustainable evelopment. The vision these people share or the future of the region encompasses: + elimination of all forms of discrimination; l the protection of human ights and democracy; l equitable, balanced, uman and sustainable evelopment:
