The economy is always shifting, so long-term plans like pursuing a college degree need more flexibility than ever. The high cost of paying for college is difficult, while sustaining family expenses. Managing your time while working is difficult too, because, the student has to adjust their job schedule to meet their course schedule availability. Getting a college degree with family commitments and working full-time seems impossible to many. Competency-based education is their solution, because it adjust to the needs of the student. There are many aspects to competency-based learning. Competency learning is the ability to do a task. Proficiency involves within the level of learning it takes for a student to master their ability to be proficient in a skill. The outcome of learning is whether the student learns something new. The student’s p erformance is the ability to do the work. A standard-base education is learning based on the standards of the industry. Competency based learning is a form of instruction. Each aspect is a form of competency learning. The most important one is that the learner’s need s are met. A college degree is directly based on what the student actually knows, and not on how much time it took them to learn something. A student following a competency based learning  program are not limited to credit hours. A student can learn to master in a skill in less time than an average college course. The type of learning is based on the student’s experience, level of proficiency and skill. If their background knowledge or work experience helps them navigate more easily through the course, it may take them less time to complete the assessment or proficiency than a student who is first learning a skill. In a competency based learning environment, the student may apply their knowledge to other courses. The students learn at their own pace to complete a computer assessment or    competency skill. The student’s grade  is based on the student outcome. The student may work on an assessment or competency until the student masters the skill. The cost of tuition is affordable. The pay is not determined by credit hour, but proof of mastery. The amount of time the student practices and studies will improve their retention and their academic performance improves. Once the student completes the course, the student may get a promotion, a raise, or even a better job. The student must have the passion for learning. The student must be motivated to learn. It takes a lot of effort outside class time to learn. Learning is a process that takes time to develop. The greatest challenge for institutions is to find industry standards to incorporate in competency- based learning. Another challenge is to implement a method of instruction and assessment to meet industry standards. The College of Southern Nevada has a 1,700 foot laboratory facility, which compensates over 130 seat capacity with over 25 casino tables. Whether you want to acquire more knowledge and skills, acquire additional training or need to be more proficient in dealing a casino game, learn game proficiency and competency skills, competency learning will help you advance your skills to deal a casino game. The casino dealer academy program offers 15 dealing courses. The student may train to deal any of the major casino games, such as, Blackjack, Craps, American Roulette, Single Zero Roulette, Baccarat, and Pai Gow Tiles. The student may also learn to take all the novelty games such as Casino War, Pai Gow Poker, Let it Ride, Crazy 4 Poker, Ultimate Texas Poker, Mississippi Stud, High Card Flush or Three Card Poker. The student may train in any course(s) they want to learn. The cost of taking a casino course at CSN is low tuition. A student may take a Blackjack, Baccarat and Tiles for under $300. A student may learn any one specialty game for under $50 each. The student can take a Craps for at least $400 and learn to deal a Single Zero Roulette course for about $200. The student may elect to take as many sessions that he wants to meet his    needs to learn casino games. Depending on his ability and the amount of competency skills, the student may need to buy additional time by taking additional course sessions to complete the course. One class session cost as little low as $25. The cost of two class sessions is as low as $50. The cost of three class sessions cost $75. The cost of four class sessions cost $100. The student may enroll in one section meeting on Mondays mornings from 8 am to 11 am or take a course that meets on Wednesday afternoon or Saturday night. The courses will meet each Monday morning in that month at that time for four weeks. The courses are set up so the student can set up their class schedule their way. Classes meet morning, afternoons and evening sessions throughout the month. A new class meets every day. New sections meet every month. The program offers low tuition credit to the students. Some casinos offer tuition reimbursement for their casino employees. The student may contact their employer development career service department for more information on how to apply for tuition reimbursement. The casino dealing program offers free training for low income people or to students with disabilities. The program accepts grants. For more information on course waivers contact the department of workforce and economic development at (702) 651.4747. The casino dealing academy program does not accept financial aid. The student may apply for college credit. The student is allowed up to 16 credits that can  be applied towards an Associate of General Studies, an Associate of Arts or an Associate Bachelor degree. All dealing course credit can be applied for college credit. Each dealing course is worth 1 to 3 credits. The major dealing courses are worth 3 credits. The specialty games are worth 1 credit. The student will need to complete a form, after completing the course, in order to acquire college credit for the course. After graduating, a student may be awarded certification for completing a course. A certificate of completion is awarded to the student after all the course requirements are met. The    student is required to complete all the computer assessments with a score of 80% to 100 % and after completing all course competency skills with a score of 4 or 5. The student grade is determined by their level of skill and understanding of the game. It is a requirement that the student is proficient in dealing the casino game. Each casino course is 100% competency based. The casino program offers job placement. After the student has graduated with the certification to deal, the student may apply for job placement at a casino. If the student is approved by the casino director of casino management, the student will be notified of where they can go to audition for a job. The basic prerequisite of dealing a casino table game is to be able to communicate, to have the manual dexterity to deal the games, and to understand the rules of dealing casino games. Casinos hire dealers who work well with others and has a desire to help others. A good dealer will manage table game operations daily. A dealer is required to understand game rules and game procedures, acquire game speed, have good knowledge of game management and game protection, and exhibit good customer service skills to deal each casino game. There are standards of the casino that must be met in a dealing instruction course. Some of the casino standards are listed as: Shuffle the cards, relieve the dealer, spread the cards, collect the bets, coloring up bets, converting bets, making cheque change, managing the tray, advancing the pace of the game, proving payouts, making color change, calling approval/alert calls, handling buy ins, making call bets and markers, cashing out, cutting, sizing into, picking cheques, sweeping layouts, chunking cheques, spinning balls, managing table, calling stick calls,  protecting the game, customer service skills, knowledge of game procedures, game management and game protection. The student upon completion of a course should demonstrate the manual dexterity to deal a game, demonstrate quick computation skills to deal a game and to demonstrate good customer service skills to deal a casino game.    The grading policy of the gaming lab is a method of determining the level of student  proficiency. All learners are graded fairly based on their skill and level of understanding. Grading is based on how a student scores in their assessments or competency skills. Assessments are theoretical learning strategies, meanin g learning is based subjectively. The student’s assessment grade is determined by a letter grade. Competencies are practical learning strategies. The student’s competency is objective that is determined by a quantitative grade. Assessments are determined by a qualitative score. An assessment requires that grading must be fair and reliable. Assessment grading is based on acquired knowledge by method of memorizing math keys, game procedures and game sequences. Competency grading is also based on applied knowledge which is learn by doing and repetition to develop a skill of proficiency. All learning assessments and competencies are aligned with casino industry standards which are fair and  practical form of training. Some of the following assessments are required in our grading policy. There are five criterion assessments that determine a student’s outcome: 1) Does the student assess the knowledge to deal, 2) Does the student demonstrate the skill to deal, 3) Does the student demonstrate a positive attitude for learning through demonstrating practical application and 4) Does the student effectively communicate and articulate the casino language? COURSE PROGRAM BLACKJACK DEALING Fundamentals of dealing Blackjack with an emphasis on card totaling, chip handling, shuffling, multiple deck delivery, payoff odds, various play options, accuracy, and game speed. Special attention given to the managerial aspects of Blackjack. CRAPS DEALING Fundamentals of dealing Craps with an emphasis on accurate and quick mental multiplication, base and stick procedures, chip handling, and take and pay sequencing. Various bets including pass line, don't pass, field, big 6, big 8, come, don't come, true odds,  place, buy, lay, and propositions are introduced. Special attention given to managerial aspects of Craps. ROULETTE DEALING Fundamentals of dealing Roulette with an emphasis on accurate and quick mental computations, chip handling techniques, spinning the ball and wheel, stack pushing
