UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI TRIESTE DIPARTIMENTO DI STUDI UMANISTICI Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Filosofia THE CONCEPT OF ENTLASTUNG   IN ARNOLD GEHLEN Limits and Possibilities for a Modern Debate Relatore Laureando Prof. Riccardo Martinelli Passavanti Federico Correlatore Prof. Martin Düchs   "   # INDEX Introduction 5 Biographical Hints 9 Chapter One 12 Chapter Two 23 Chapter Three 34 Conclusion 43 Bibliography 46   $   % INTRODUCTION  The aim of this work is to understand if and to what extent it is possible to include  Arnold Gehlen’s concept of “Relief” (   Entlastung   ), and the resultant considerations on technique, into a modern debate about the increasing development of technology.  What makes this task difficult to be carried out is the little regard showed for Arnold Gehelen’s anthropological assumptions on which all his philosophical system is based upon. However, it is the belief of this work to find out reasons to reconsider as modern and useful some remarks of this underrated author. In addition to this introduction, the essay consists of four parts.  The first part is a short biography of Arnold Gehlen. This will be useful to better understand the figure of the philosopher and the background his thought stems up from.  The second part will show the anthropological scenario in which Arnold Gehlen lived and worked. The huge and ever-increasing scientific development of the 20th century has brought to light new and several aspects of the human being, crossing different fields of studies such as biology, psychology, sociology, linguistics and economy.  Although this progress has been a sort of miracle, an unrepeatable wave of success and discoveries, its subject, the man, has been treated and analysed by single pieces, transecting the unique totality. Philosophical anthropology comes out from this urge to understand human being in his oneness, integrating scientific outcomes to reach a synthetic vision of him. Setting itself on a crossroad between philosophy, natural science and human science, this discipline  wants to help men regaining the comprehension of hisself and of his essence.  The works of Max Scheler and Helmut Plessner, though being the milestones of this field of study and an unquestionable inspiration for Arnold Gehlen, will be only the launch pad for a philosophic-anthropological breakthrough carried out by our author.
