DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (UNIT- I TEST) SUB:6301 ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS II MECH ,C,D  /III SEM PART-A (Answer any FIVE Questions) 1.   Distinguish between the terms ‘State’ and ‘Process’ of thermodynamics  2.   State the first law of thermodynamics for a non-flow process and for a cycle. 3.   What is meant by quasi-static process in thermodynamics? 4.   Distinguish between ‘Macroscopic energy’ and ‘Microscopic energy’  5.   What is meant by steady flow process? And what are the conditions for steady flow process? 6.   Distinguish between Intensive property and Extensive property. 7.   Define Thermodynamic equilibrium and explain 8.   Differentiate between point function and path function. PART-B ( Answer any TWO Questions ) 9.   (a) Determine the heat transfer and its direction for a system in which a perfect gas having molecular weight of 6 is compressed from 101.3kpa , 20˚ C to a pressure of 600kpa following the law pV 1.3 =constant. Take specific heat at constant pressure of gas as 1.7 kJ/kgK.  b Air at 1.02 bar, 22°C, initially occupying a cylinder volume of 0.015 m3, is compressed reversibly and adiabatically by a piston to a pressure of 6.8 bar. Calculate : (i) The final temperature ;(ii) The final volume ;(iii) The work done. 10.   (a)A gas of mass 1.5kg undergoes a quasi-static expansion, which follows a relationship p=a+bV, where ‘a’ and ‘b’ are constants. The initial and final pressures are 1000 kPa and 200 kPa respectively and the corresponding volumes are 0.2m3 and 1.2m3. The specific internal energy of the gas is given by the relation U=(1.5pV-85) kJ/kg, where p is in kPa and V is in m3. Calculate the net heat transfer and the maximum internal energy of the gas attained during expansion. 11.   0.2 m3 of air at 4 bar and 130°C is contained in a system. A reversible adiabatic expansion takes place till the pressure falls to 1.02  bar. The gas is then heated at constant pressure till enthalpy increases by 72.5 kJ. Calculate :(i) The work done ;(ii) The index of expansion, if the above processes are replaced by a single reversible polytropic process giving the same work between the same initial and final states.Take cp = 1 kJ/kg K, cv = 0.714 kJ/kg K.
