Hangout: Making Smart Cities a Reality in Brazil: Call for projects with Newton Fund

This panel, led by Newton Fund Brazil team, will give attendees a better picture about the requirements for the recently opened call for projects in the Smart Cities sector. The presentation will provide further knowledge about the requirements for bidding for the fund, and creating partnerships between British and Brazilian companies. In Nov 2016, The Ministry for Economic Development in Brazil and Innovate UK launched an R$18M (£4M) call for funding R&D partnerships between Brazilian and UK companies under the auspices of Newton Fund. It will be a two year duration programme, focused on the development of technologies for smart cities and sustainable urban environments, proposing integrated solutions in the areas of: -Internet of Things; -Big Data; -Smart Grids; -Multi-modal transportation technology; -Traffic management technology; -Clean energy; -Waste and water management and blue-green infrastructure; Audience UK and BR companies, trade associations, R&D Centres and multipliers interested in the Smart Cities / IoT sector

PesquisaPessoas Inovação OFFICIAL • Objective: Strengthen the bilateral relationship between the UK and Brazil in the area of science and innovation and promote socio-economic development through science and technology • Resources : Non-reimbursable resources – British Fund for Official Development Assistance “ODA” • Investiment : £735 million in 16 countries in 7 years (2014-2021) • In Brazil : £11 million per year between 2016 and 2020; £12 million in 2021. Total: £56 million. • Programmatic Axes: • Collaboration Model : i. Promotion of socio-economic development ii. Transparency and disclosure of public notice iii.   • 4. •In Nov 2016, Innovate UK and MDIC/BNDES/EMBRAPII launched a £4M call focusing on tackling urban challenges trough innovative business solutions. •This competition is open to companies interested in developing technological solutions under the following scope areas: 1.Integration and governance of systems within a city; 2.Urban infrastructure and affordable, smart mobility; or 3.Sustainable urban environments. •The eligible technologies are: Internet of things Big data Smart grids Multimodal transport technology Smart Cities Competition - Introduction  Traffic management solutions  Clean energy solutions  Waste and water management  Blue-green infrastructure OFFICIAL

  • 6. • Collaborative projects submitted by consortia, which must be business-led in both countries. Minimum consortium: 1 UK business and 1 Brazilian business. • There are no restriction to size or revenue of participating Brazil and UK business. • Multinational or international companies with a Brazilian subsidiary are considered an eligible Brazilian company. Same for public companies based in Brazil. • Universities and research centers can participate in consortiums, together with a business proponent. • Projects must focus on Industrial Research stage of R&D. • Projects must be between 12 and 24 months in length.   • 7. •Impact generation is an essential eligibility criteria for this competition We don’t want generic details about the benefits of your technology/project. We don’t want generic details about societal impact. We don’t want only quantitative arguments, e.g. revenues or jobs created •You need to show us though carefully about this and understood your market and the Brazilian context well. Our assessors will be looking closely at this. If you don’t tell us, they can’t extrapolate or assume these wider benefits. Clear and specific social, environmental and economic impact is an essential component for a successful proposal Brazil Smart Cities Competition – Criteria (II/IV) OFFICIAL
  • 8. UK applicants: • Total eligible project costs from UK partners expected to be between £200k-£500k. Projects with costs higher or lower than this range must have had prior approval from Innovate UK. • The business proportion of total eligible project costs must be 70% or higher; the total of all combined research organisation costs cannot exceed 30% of the overall project costs. • Capital usage: Expenditure on capital usage is eligible under this competition as long as all materials are directly related and essential to the goals of the project. All equipment purchased for this project that presents a residual value greater than £1 at project end will have to be donated to the recipient country, in compliance with ODA rules.   • 9. Brazilian applicants: •In Brazil, projects are eligible for funding by BNDES and/or EMBRAPII. This creates three possible ways in which funding may happen: • BNDES only: projects are supported only by BNDES refundable loans. Earliest possible project start date: 1st June 2018. • EMBRAPII only: projects are supported only by EMBRAPII non-refundable grants (requires the participation of an EMBRAPII-accredited research institution - EMBRAPII Units and/or Poles). Earliest possible project start date: 1st December 2017. • BNDES and EMBRAPII: projects are supported by a combination of BNDES loans and EMBRAPII grants. Earliest possible project start date: 1st June 2018.
