Ahmed Alsahhar Experiment Date: 28/02/2011  Exp No.1 Total Moisture Content Introduction:- Definition:    Total Moisture Content is the total Amount of water present on the external & internal surfaces of aggregates. 1.   Objective:    Determine the total moisture of aggregates [Fine or Coarse]. 2.   Apparatus:-    A balance    Drying Oven    Sample Container 3.   Procedures:- i.   First , we choose the size of sample according to Max. Aggregate Size.  the following schedule explain the relationship between max aggregate size  & Mass of aggregate sample . Max. Aggregate Size (mm) Minimum Mass of aggregate Sample (Kg) 4.75 0.5 9.5 1.5 12.5 2 19 3 25 4 6 8 50 8 63 10  ii.   Then  , we weight the sample(wet weight) W w  . iii.   After that  , we dry the sample by but it in the oven for 24 hours ±4 & temperature of 110º ± 5 º until the weight of sample be constant. iv.   Finally  ,we eject the sample from the oven & weight it (W OD ) . 4.   Measurement :-    Pan No. F14    W Pan = 115.65 g    W  pan+wet sample  = 282.11 g    W  pan+dry sample  =   276.34 g    W w = W  pan+wet sample  - W Pan =282.11-115.65= 166.46 g    W OD  = W  pan+dry sample  - W Pan  = 276.34-115.65 = 160.69 g 5.   Calculations :- WC =        100% WC=    =3.59% 6.   Result:-    The total moisture of the sample =3.59% 7.   Comment:-    The moisture of sample is high & its reduced the amount of water if it used in the concrete.  Exp No.2 Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse & Fine Aggregate Introduction   Moisture Conditions of aggregates:    Oven Dry (OD) :- All free moisture , whether external surface moisture or internal moisture , driven off by heat  .    Air Dry (AD):-  No surface moisture , but some internal moisture remains.      Saturated Surface Dry (SSD) :- Aggregates are said to be SSD when their moisture states are such that during mixing they will neither absorb any of the mixing water added ; nor will they contribute any of their contained water to the mix.      Wet :- Aggregate containing moisture in excess of the SSD  condition .   Definitions :-    Specific gravity:- Is   the ratio of the weight of a unit volume of aggregate to the equal volume of water.    Absorption:- Is the weight of water present only inside the pores of aggregates, expressed as a percentage of the dry weight.    NB:- Absorption represents the maximum amount of water the aggregate can absorb. Absorption can calculated from the difference in weight between the SSD  & OD  stares , expressed as a percentage of the OD  weight. Absorption =        100%
