Language Objective(s):    Key Vocabulary:    Topic Sentence, Metaphor, Imagery, Tone, Figurative Language Nevada Standards:    8 th  grade: W.8.2a Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow. W.8.2e Establish and maintain formal style. W.8.4 Produce clear writing with appropriate organization, style, and development. RL.8.2 Determine the theme of a text and its development over the course of a work. RL.8.3 Analyze how certain lines propel a story. RL.8.6 Analyze how differences in points of view between author and reader create humor. Warm Up Activity:    Journal entry   o   What have you learned about poetry that you didn‟t understand before?   Lesson Sequence:    Pre-reading activity: Journal Entry    Students will write their journal entry in their poetry packet. Share with class and discuss. (3-5 mins.)      Go through poetry power-point and packet item #5 „How to Read Poetry‟ . (7-10 mins.)      Stop at #6 in the poetry packet  –    „Introduction to Poetry‟. Read/Annotate as a class.      Have students answer the questions in their poetry packet. Have students pair share what they answered. Discuss and share as class. (5-7 mins.)    Pass out The Road Not Taken  handout. Read/Annotate as a class.   Discuss as class. Have students pull out NVACS handout for annotation guide. (5-7 mins.)    Just as we found a metaphor, and example of imagery, and tone of the piece in the last poem also find the same in The Road Not Taken  and annotate what they found on their copy of the  poem as a class. (5-7 mins.)    Have students finish the handout and turn in at the end of class. Accommodations:    As needed per individual student. Supplementary Materials:    Highlighter (each student)      Poetry Packet (each student) & NVACS annotating handout (each student)      Poetry Power Point      “ The Road Not Taken ” handout ( each student)  Review/Assessment:    Discussions taking place during & after reading.    Discussions taking place during & after pair sharing moments.    Written assessment on handout that will be graded for completion. `Reflection:     After completion of lesson.
