  SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN Made by: Sakshi Jogi College :Smt. Maherbanu College of Science and Commerce  SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN ABSTRACT Mahatma Gandhi who laid great emphasis on cleanliness. He himself said that Sanitation is more important than Independence. He wanted India to be a clean India. He very well had a clear understanding of the pathetic condition of the rural people. According to the statistics, it has seen that only few percentage of total population have access to the toilets. It is a programmer run by the government to seriously work to fulfill the vision of Father of Nation (Bapu) by calling the  people from all walks of life to make it successful globally. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national cleanliness campaign established by the Government of India. This campaign is covering 4041 statutory towns in order to clean roads, streets, and infrastructure of the India. It is a mass movement has run to create a Clean India by 2019. It is a step ahead to the Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of Swachh Bharat for healthy and prosperous life. This mission was launched on 2nd of October 2014 (145th birth anniversary of Bapu) by targeting its completeness in 2019 on 150th  birth anniversary of Bapu. The mission has been implemented to cover all the rural and urban areas of the India under the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation accordingly the first cleanliness drive (on 25th of September 2014) of this mission was started by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi earlier to its launch. This mission has targeted to solve the sanitation problems as well as better waste management all over the India  by creating sanitation facilities to all. Swachh Bharat mission is very necessary to run continuously in India until it gets its goal. It is very essential for the people in India to really get the feeling of physical, mental, social and intellectual well-being. It is to make living status advance in India in real means which can be started by bringing all over cleanliness. INTRODUCTION  Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is started by the government to make India a completely clean India. Clean India was a dream seen by the Mahatma Gandhi regarding which he said that, “Sanitation is more important than Independence”. During his time he was well aware of the poor and dirty condition of the country that’s why he made various efforts to complete his dream however could not be successful. As he dreamt of clean India a day, he said that both clean lines and sanitation are integral parts of healthy and peaceful living. Unfortunately, India became lack of cleanliness and sanitation even after 67 years of independence. 1) It is really very essential to eliminate the open defecation in India as well as making available toilets facility to everyone. 2) It is needed in India to convert the insanitary toilets into flushing toilets. 3) It is necessary in order to eradicate the manual scavenging system. 4) It is to implement the proper waste management through the scientific processes, hygienic disposal, reuse, and recycling of the municipal solid wastes. 5) It is to bring behavioral changes among Indian people regarding maintenance of personal hygiene and practice of healthy sanitation methods. 6) It is to create global awareness among common public living in rural areas and link it to the  public health.   7) It is to support working bodies to design, execute and operate the waste disposal systems locally. 8) It is to bring private-sector participation to develop sanitary facilities all through the India 9) It is to make India a clean and green India. 10) It is necessary to improve the quality of life of people in rural areas. OBJECTIVES The campaign of Swachh Bharat launched by the government of India is aimed to accomplish various goal s and fulfil the vision and mission of “Clean India” by 2 nd  of October 2019 which is 150 th  birth anniversary of the great Mahatma Gandhi. It has been expected that the investment to cost would be over 62000 crore of Indian rupee (means US$ of 9.7 billion). It has been declared  by the government that this campaign is taken as “beyond politics” and “inspired by patriotism”. Following are the some important objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: 1)   To eradicate the system of open defecation in India. 2)   To remove the system of manual scavenging. 3)   To make people aware of healthy sanitation practices by bringing behavioral changes in  people. 4)   To link people with the programmes of sanitation and public health in order to generate  public awareness. 5)   To build up the urban local bodies strong in order to design, execute and operate all systems related to cleanliness. 6)   To completely start the scientific processing, disposals reuse and recycling the Municipal Solid Waste. 7)   To provide required environment for the private sectors to get participated in the Capital Expenditure for all the operations and maintenance costs related to the clean campaign. SELECTED PUBLIC FIGURE Modi selected 12 public figures to propagate this campaign.They are:    Shilpa Shetty    Sachin Tendulkar    Priyanka Chopra    Baba Ramdev    Shah Rukh Khan    Vidya Balan    Shashi Tharoor    Team of Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah    Amitabh Bachan    Mridula Sinha    Kamal Hasan    Virat Kohli    Mahendra Singh Dhoni    All citizens of India  PERFORMANCE  Between April 2014 and January 2015, 3,183,000 toilets were built. Karnataka led all States in construction of toilets under the programme. As of August 2015, 8 million toilets have been constructed under the program. As of 27 October 2016, 56 districts in India were ODF. In January 2017, Indore city as well as rural areas were announced open defecation free by the central government. The national sanitation coverage rose from 42 per cent in 2014 to 65 per cent in 2017. Five states, 149 districts and 2.08 lakh villages were declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) till August 2017. The cities and towns which have been declared ODF stood at 22 per cent and the urban wards which have achieved 100 per cent door-to-door solid waste collection stood at 50 per cent. The number of Swachhagrahi volunteers working across urban local bodies rose to 20,000, and those working in rural India rose to more than a lakh. The number of schools with separate toilet facilities for girls rose from 0.4 million (37 per cent) to almost one million (91 per cent). As per an independent survey released by Quality Council of India in August 2017, overall national rural "household access to toilet" coverage increased to 62.45 per cent and usage of 91.29 per cent, with Haryana topping the national ranking with 99 per cent of households in rural areas covered and usage of 100 per cent.   LIST OF CITIES Swachh Sarvekshan 2017 was conducted between 4 January 2017 and 7 February 2017. As of the same month, 71 public sector undertakings in India supported the construction of 86,781 new toilets. Most of these toilets are a type of  pit latrine, mostly the twin pit pour flush type. Hundreds of thousands of Indian people are still employed as manual scavengers in emptying  buckets and pit latrines. CLEANEST CITY OF INDIA Indore:  Until two years ago, Madhya Pradesh’s largest and most populous city Indore painted a dismal picture of cleanliness and sanitation, earning itself the 149th spot in the Swachhta survey in 2014. The ranking was enough to put the administration to shame. And there began the story of a great turnaround. A year later, in the same survey, Indore jumped to 25th position, recording multi-fold growth. But not many outside Indore noticed it. The cleanliness warriors of the city, which is also known as mini-Bombay for being business friendly, continued to work tirelessly. Cut to 2017, Union minister of housing and urban poverty alleviation Venkaiah Naidu on May 4 declared that Indore was ranked the cleanest city in India. The numerouno position took many by surprise, but it came after sustained efforts of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). The municipal corporation has a lot of first to its credit. Giving full leverage to its workers to deal with the menace of stray animals, the corporation was probably the first such body to have  brought down illegal dairies and cattle houses that were in a deplorable condition. Many other illegal structures across the city were razed. Prominent among those were the 5-km stretch from Kanadia to Telephone Nagar, dense Raj Mohalla to BadaGanpati area in old city, Mhow Naka to Tori Corner (from where the mayor belongs) and Malwa Mill.
